52 plate 1.2 clio - toxic warning light

my toxic warning light came on this morning on the m4. i didnt know i had one till i consulted the book as its the same as the coolant light just without "stop" in the middle anyway i digress, a quick search indicates this is not uncommon on clios as it crops up on a few forums but with few answers or faults analysis. does anyone know what the cause is, at first i thought it was a fault lambda sensor but the stuff on the web points to the coils which could need replacing (car has done 44000 miles)
it did it all the way home too, driving along fine, hten the light comes on, rev gauge goes from 1K to 6K to 1K to back where it was and its like the engine goes into safe mode, it judders around like its on three cylinders and has no power whatsoever till you take your foot off the throttle, ket it do the rev gauge thing then it resumes normal progress.
cant be good for the engine and driving it home might not have helped but my RAC cover is the cheap poor mans one and only gets me home from a maximum of 10 miles away or to a garage (its being upgraded at the weekend!)
anyway, does anyone have a clue whats caused the toxic warning light to come on and the bizarre engine issues?
