Help with brakes for Maloo R8
Discussion
Hi
I've got a 2001 HSV maloo R8 ute - it was making a nasty screeching/squealing noise with also a bit of judder when braking so I took it to Greens Vauxhall as they are near to me. They reckoned a bit of stick/stone was stuck in my brakes but that I also needed new rear brake pads. The guy on the phone said they don't have the replacement parts but that the pads from a VXR would fit....OK - they had them in stock.
He then said that I would soon be needing new front discs and that I should get new pads at the same time, but that they didn't even have part numbers for the discs as they weren't the same as anything currently available. He said to try and source some from australia or have some custom made! Sounds very expensive.
Does anyone know which size discs I need as well as a HSV part number? Or can anyone suggest an easier/cheaper alternative when it comes to getting front brakes sorted?!?!
Thanks!
Jon

From memory if it's an R8 then it had the Performance brake option which are exactly the same as those fitted to the UK VXR.
Thee only difference should be that the VXR had the later grooved discs where your car will have the plain ones.
If you're changing both discs this shouldn't be a problem.

hi
thanks for the response but Greens have supplied VXR pads for the rear but I need to price/obtain new discs for the front and new pads for the front - can you help with these also?
Although it's an R8 I think the performance braking package was an optional extra...not sure if I've got it or not. It doesn't have the red AP calipers
To be honest, they suggest changing the discs, as often as they change their underwear in this place.
What I would suggest is if the disk is getting uneven is to have them machined. They are made with plenty of metal for you to do these quiet a few times. Think the minimum thickness is 3mm (could be wrong), but it should be stamped on the disk itself. These disks are good enough to go a few rounds with a lathe.

ok - that sounds like a good plan. Will the vxr front pads work with my machined HSV discs though or will I still need to source some HSV pads?
thanks,
Jon
If the callipers are not red it sounds like they will be a PBR caliper if you could measure the diameter of the disk that would help sort out what pads you would need there are a few variants. Either way I don't think you need to get any thing made to fit post a picture of the calliper and the size and I am sure Monkfish Performance or Vauxhall will have what you need. I skimmed my HSV disk's on my 2001 GTS UK (Clubsport R8 in AUS) and they were fine for a long time after that.
I thought I would bring back a few bits and pieces with me thinking that prices would be fairly rip off from Vauxhall etc( Not that I'd let them near my ute anyway) . I've just been quoted $600 NZD for a complete set of pads for my 2005 Maloo by Holden agent. I bought a set of Ferodos ( front and rears) from Repco for $100NZ (About £40). Just as interest, from Local Holden agent bought 3 oil filters for $13 dollars each (£5.20) and low and high beam bulbs for $31 and $24 respectively. What are a set of pads worth over there?
