Probably going to be looking for a slightly bigger family car later in the year and like the A3. I have a '99 A4 which we love and is our second car - there isn't much room in the back and obviously the boot isn't that high though, and our Focus doesn't have that big a boot which is why we might be changing it.
Anybody with kids have one and find they have trouble with luggage and 2 x pushchairs?? Definitely opt for the 1.9TDi, probably 5 door.
I suppose I should look for an Avant (or another Ford - cheaper running costs), but then I tell myself about servicing costs at Audi anyway etc etc....

The A3's cabin is surprisingly big - I'd say bigger than the current A4. My family's quite tall - both my dad and elder brother are 6ft 5 plus, yet behind them both there's enough space for a couple of 6 footers to travel comfortably. It's very impressive stuff.

However, there's obviously the pay-off that the A3, in 3-dr form, has less of a boot than the A4, but I think the Sportback/5-dr has addressed this problem - don't quote me though.

The rear of the A3 is not that spacious at all. We were looking at an A3 2.0T Sportback and a new Golf GTi. The Golf is vastly bigger in the back. A3 had much less legroom, and crap headroom for adults, plus the boot was no bigger than the Golf. I would say it is smaller than the A4 in the back.

There's no more rear seat space than in a Saloon (I've owned both at the same time). Have a look at a Passat Estate, I'm told there's more space but haven't vhecked.

i have the 2 door a3 and dont recommend it to anyone with more than 2 people on a regular basis. the back seat is claustraphobic cos the roof comes down low and the little windows. the 4 door'er is a little better but leg room is still rubbish.
had an a4 s-line avant as courtosy car (however you spell it!) amazing little/big car. just missed 2 darling angels and a dog!! got the grunt and looks of a hot hatch, esp the s-line or s4, with the space for a family.
hope that waffle helps!lol biggrin
