How to test a turbo?

Hi,

Ive recently purchased a Turbo for my engine its a huge Rajay unit. I want to know its going to be ok before I make manifolds and pipe work etc. There seems no play in the shaft and no types of scoring at all. Is there anyway I can check or do anything. Im only looking for around 6-7psi from it.

If the shaft pulls in and out then it needs a rebuild. If it has enough side to side play to touch the housings it needs a rebuild and may even be scrap. If it just has a bit of side to side play it's probably fine.

It has no play at all, im spinning the compressor wheel and it feels like a nice resistance to it. So I guess I have to fit it and see if thats all the testing I can do

Why such a huge turbo for relatively low boost levels?

Because its for a v8 4.0 so needed to flow lots i guess.
