Golf speedo problem

Evening all!
The speedo needle on the wife's Golf flicks around all over the place, only occasionally settling at the correct speed. I've located the electronic transducer on the transmission casing and intend to replace this part but before I do is there anything else which would cause this problem? All the other instruments are working normally.
