New Capri For 2012
Report: Ford wants to build a Scirocco-beating Capri
The Ford Capri is one of those odd cars that has been the butt of a fair few jokes over the years but now it’s gone people really seem to miss it.
Ford has in the past brought out the ‘new Capri’ in the form of the Probe and Cougar, but the reality is they didn’t really hit the spot.
Now apparently the US firm is serious about creating a Capri replacement, having been spurred into action by the arrival of the new VW Scirocco.
Several reports in Germany claim Ford is preparing a new concept to celebrate next year’s 40th anniversary of the original ’69 Ford Capri Mark 1.
The concept will eventually be turned into a new mk4 version around 2012.
Some sources are telling us to expect the latest Kinetic design to feature heavily on the Capri, as seen on the recent Kuga and new Focus range.
According to Autobild, the new Capri will range will have an output of between 140 and 250bhp with both four and five-cylinder engines on offer.
The car will also be about the same size as the new Scirocco and will be priced from about £17,000.
I am very pleased to hear you will be bringing back the Capri.
I loved my Dads white 2.0S. I request the new one is:
- also rear wheel drive (unlike the probe)
- not too heavy (so it shifts)
- has some proper suspension so it will go round corners in a fairly stable manner (but can still donut when asked)
- has some retro styling clues
many thanks
I also ran a Honda Aerodeck 3-dr (lovely engine but thirsty and front-heavy) and a Scirocco (nice all round but small), all in the late '80s.
The hatch rear was what made them useful to me – room for cameras and bike.
4-5 seats made them sociable too.

Reckon we could see something with a bit more oomph by 2012

Many thanks for your communication. We at Ford are very excited by the introduction of the New Ford Capri and are glad that you are a fan of the previous car. Modern trends and efficiency considerations dictate that the New Ford Capri will be Front Wheel Drive, but we're sure that you'll find it equally as exciting (if not more so) than the original car. As for the weight, the plan is to keep it under 1,800KG, so it will be a very sporty model indeed. The suspension will be that based on the very sucessful Ford Focus. This suspension, combined with ABS, EBD, TCS, AYC, BOBFOC, HOBPB and T1TS will ensure that the car is safe but exciting. The power plant at launch will be the 1.6TDi engine, so not only will there be great performance, but great fuel efficiency too. All in all, as I'm sure you'll agree, this is very exciting time for Ford.
Many thanks,
Henry Ford vii.
p.s. Also look out for the 7 seat Ford Capri C-Max in 2014.

Are Alfa the only ones doing interesting "family" sized sporting cars these days? I mean on the visuals - there's no doubt (from the press at least) that the various VWs/Fords have reasonable handling, but its a nice thought for the cars to actually look as good as they handle.
I've owned most models of Capris over the years MkI's of every engine size (including 1.3!), MkII JPS and various MKIII's 1.6, 2.0, 2.3, 2.8, 3.0, 3.1
One off my mates was featured in Auto-Express comparing his 280 Brooklands to the Probe when it was launch, he was quite so polite talking to us about it as he was in the article.
Lets hope this time if there even hinting towards the name they make it old school, with the drive at the rear.

If not, I'll just repeat myself

What I don't want is another Probe/Cougar FWD half-assed attempt at a new Capri. The Capri should always be a lairy RWD coupe, with a decent engine up front. Styling needs to be classic Capri, non of your new-edge triangular noughties rubbish, thank you very much.
Ford already have a perfectly good platform in the current Mustang. It would lend itself beautifully to a new Capri

Getting there:

A few more attempts
