Bizzare Fiesta Gearbox issue!
Discussion
2000/W Fiesta Zetec S 1.6. Found today that the gearbox is caked in clean gearbox oil! Bought the car a fortnight ago and have had nothing but smooth running since, then today I find it not only hard to get into reverse, but a massive puddle of oil under the car! Got underneath and the oil is everywhere! It's not coming from the driveshaft seals and most of it was ON TOP of the box.
I topped the oil up, jet washed the box off and drove 10miles home. Since it's been home, no leaking!
It seemed to be wettest around the joint where the box casing bolts to the bell housing, but I checked all the bolts were tight.
Theres nothing obvious leaking, or even not so obvious. If it weren't for the fact that it had lost oil and the gears were hard to select, I'd put it down to overspill from something else! Long shot but anyone had anything similar?!

Hi, I also have a Zetec S and also find it difficult to get into reverse sometimes. It is common as its a tight gear, but can be solved by going into first and then trying, or releasing the clutch and trying again.
As for the gearbox i have had nothing wrong with mine, they are good for up to 150 bhp as far as i know, just hope its ok!

Not had the issue with mine. As the last chap said, it's a tight gear anyway and those solutions generally help in getting it into gear.
I did speak to a Ford mechanic several weeks after I bought mine, who told me about the noisy Clutch Release Bearings, but he also said that they have been known to go through gearboxes as a lot of them have been driven 'enthusiatically' by previous owners. His exact words were 'you'll know it a long time before it goes, but dont be surprised if you replace a gearbox'.
I don't think they're all doom and gloom though, mine's not really had any issues in the 2 years i've had it and as for the oil around the bell housing i'm sorry I cant offer any more information.

By some obscure bad luck, it appears that my gearbox is beginning to develop some issues since posting on this thread.
It seems to dislike 3rd and 4th when changing gear over 2500rpm, i'm also having occasional issues with 1st, but I think that's due to the gearbox design being allegedly archaic.
With 3rd and 4th, it delays in going into gear and occasionally grinds if i'm changing too quickly.

Leak is possibly the breather ontop of the gearbox, it's a plastic square with an arrow on it, this should be pointing towards the front of the car.
I've got a 2000/W reg fiesta zetec s aswell, and some pillock had put the breather in the wrong way around, dumping all of the gearbox oil absolutely everywhere.
The breather just pulls out
Hope this helps.
