Freelander Help - Engine Light

Hiya folks,
The search facility is not working so apologies if this has been covered before. I have an S reg Freelander with the 2L turbocharged diesel. During the last 2 days, the engine has been starting strangely. The first start from cold has been normal. Every subsequent start has been odd in that as soon as the engine lights up it revs to about 2-2250 rpm for about 1-2 sec then drops back to normal idle. I start the car with my foot off the accelerator so I am not causing it. Today after starting for the first time the red 'check engine' light came on. The handbook says switch off for 30s and restart, if it is still there you can continue driving but get it checked out asap to prevent engine damage. Unfortunately - it came back on.
I have checked all fluid levels and they are fine, glo plugs were done 6 months ago and the fuel filter about 2 months ago.
Does anybody have any ideas? I am not able to get it to a garage until next week and will have to drive it a fair distance before it goes in.
