Well as some of you on this forum will know that my P&J got sick last weekend frown

I have decided that with my past motorsport engineering skills i would have a crack at sorting the Clio out myself, now this is a worry as technology has moved forward since the pinto and crossflow engine, but i'm going to have a go.

As the engine has to come out to replace the clutch and cam belt i am going to lightly modify the engine its ok Dave no hairdryers being fitted but not stupidly as i want it reliable, well as reliable as a V6 Clio can be!

This is going to take sometime to do as i intend on getting the car up together all round and it may even be clean enough for Dizeee.hehe

I guess what i am saying is would it be of interest to anyone on here,if i posted a progress Diary as such with pictures,no charlie not the puppiesnono

Cheers Dave

I would definatly be interested in a diary! biggrin

If you need a hand with some of the work then I'm sure a few of us would happily 'hoon' over to your neck of the woods welding some tools. wink

It's a shame that your P&J will be off the road for a while, but this sounds like a great idea Dave, i would love to watch the progress.

If you are not going the hair dryer route, what are you planning to do?

Yep - I'd be interested to see how you get on beer

I was half thinking of trying to do more of the work on my car myself, but it's too much hassle to drop the subframe and gearbox at the front without a proper garage / lift.

I don't think any "welding" of tools will help....

NB - have a folding engine crane and an engine stand if required.

Ok thanks chaps, looks like a camera and diary to be part of this project then thumbup and may take you up on the welding of toolslaugh
Keith may need to talk beer vouchers in exchange for engine stand loan smile

Will also be posting this up on V6 clio as well as it is likely that i will need help at some point.

The route i am looking at is : Cams, throttle bodies, lightening of flywheel and balancing, induction kit, re-map and a few other items, oh yes the Clutch also. No blower as i want to live a bit longer.

The original wheels have been sourced and are waiting, and the suspension is going to be re-done.

The car had been looked after by the previous owners but not loved if that makes sense!

Time for much needed TLC and money to get her back into former glory!

Alas no TCS or ABS looks towards Nathan grinninghehe

Could lord Kinky sticky this for me please as i don't want this moved from TVS thanks wink

So i am now off to the workshops!

Day One 29th March 2008

Here goes:

How it started (and how it should end!) Note the hurried entrance to workshop, it was peeing down and had to do a quick clean of floor!

Easy stuff first. Covers off! How i grew to regret these words a bit later on.

We discovered some interesting connections...

At some point the previous owners have fitted non standard light clusters, and had cut and shunt these units back on. This is the reason so many lights were coming on and off in wet weather, and the other side is even worse! yikes
Think we will be taking trip to the breakers for some new plugs with longer wires and solder them together with heat shrink (a proper job)
Even the immobiliser is wired by bella the pasta twister!

And some even better repairs... (think it is supposed to be fibre glassing)

Oh my god headache what an absolute piggin basturd this was to get off!
Only 14 x 10mm bolts to get undone Hummmmmmmm think we have found the cause of the rear caliper seizure here.
The car has taken a spin at some point in its life and has hit the nearside rear against something, and split the rear bumper.
Now some numpty has tried repairing this little fuax pas by some god damn awful fibreglassing (see picture) but not only did they fill the bumper but all the retaining bolts as well mad After breaking the bolts off the mounts for the bumper. Damage has become apparent to nearside tie bar and have a good idea that this is the cause of the caliper problem we had!

Took off lots of bits...Anyone know where they go?

Now this is a woman thing! everything is stacked neatly, No cardboard boxes allowed, and she has labelled stuff! arghhhhhh

Day One ended with a lot of questions now answered about the handling etc, this shows the exhaust still in situ but it has now been removed too, again had to cut bolts with hacksaw and one end pinged off and caught me in the ear curse mrsxllifts, helpful as usual, was killing herself laughing.smash
All the easy bits wobble have now been removed, and day two starts with the real stuff, starting to remove engine ancilleries etc.

Total Time spent: 2 Hrs

Tomorrow: Engine work begins. eek

Day Two 21st April 2008

Well after mini me's return to his mum's woohoo bless him i love him to bits really work has started in earnest.

Got the compressor replaced under warranty and this ones sounds totally different and now cuts out when pressure is reached.

So today was spent removing the nearside rear suspension and brakes along with the seats and trim.

So many pipes and sensors here its ruddy confusing taking them out is going to be easy but my memory is failing me now so pictures a plenty me thinks!

Ah now thats the handbrake cable that is run under the subframe and held in with really expensive fixings yes you guessed cable ties and one p clip each side.rolleyes

ABS sensor wires

Now when i said to the mrs get in there and strip thats not quite what i meant hehegetmecoat

The rear end stripped of suspension and all thats left to do to enable engine to drop out is disconnect the looms, cooling systems, clutch cable and gear linkages

Now here's the really fun part this is the TWR development engine that we collected on Thursday.cool

Can't wait to hear this baby running with a few mods, Seriously thinking of yozzasport throttle bodies now! Think the only throttling going on maybe mrsxllifts when she finds out how much they are laugh

Time spent 2.5 Hours

Total Time so far 4.5 Hours

Day three will be posted tommorow too Knackered to post it all tonight

Hi Ben, You sober this time of night rofl have updated the above a bit more.
If your still worried about removing your subframe don't, it looks quite easy and is proving not too bad. it is just the bodges by other people that is causing us problems.
I'm glad the clutch went when it did as i have found stuff that needs doing before it breaks, ie: power steering pipes perished etc.

Have a good safe run tomorrow and have a brekky for me wink

Blimey - that's an impressive start! After 2 hours I'd have still been walking round the car drinking my tea, and deciding where to start! biggrin

Sorry to hear you've uncovered some nasties - hope they're not too hard to put right!

Unfortunately, part two will be slightly delayed til tomorrow!! After geting up late, we decided to pop in to Pizza s1ut for a 'quick' bite to eat. It took nearly three hours to have something to eat by which time Mr X L was fuming so we decided to come home and do paper work tonight, then spend all evening tomorrow fiddling about with car!

But now he's alseep on the sofa!
