info needed on porsche gearbox conversion

Has anyone converted a Porsche carrera C4 box to a different engine, and does the starter motor need to stay on the engine side of the box or can it be converted to the same side as on SBC ultimas? It's not for an ultima but I'm sure I read a post here about a C4 box being used. Any info would be much appreciated.
