I am thinking of getting rid (unfortunately) of my cherished Mercedes SL 320, and am looking at a Range Rover 3 ltr diesel possibly automatic (is there such a thing in diesel)

Is this engine a good one or are there some pointers to look for, the same goes for the gearbox?
Alternatively how does the 4.4 compare on fuel compared with the diesel.
I guess I'm asking "what is the best engine / gearbox to have" although I do prefer automatics.

Also are there corrosion issues to look out for etc.

I'm looking at spending £20.000 approx on a 52 - 53 plate with all usual history / records, and lots of toys / gadgets.
Any feedback would be appreciated thanks. smile

I'm assuming this is the V6 Diesel that they put in the Disco 3. If so it is a superb lump and comparable in performance with the 4.0 V8 that is in the Disco 2 but with the fuel consumption advantages. The RR will be heavier than the Disco but I suspect still quite lively with this engine.

The original P38 diesel was a piece of st.

Not driven the 4.4 V8 RR. Is it the BMW lump that they put in the X5 or 540. If so it's very lively but with average consumption around 16-18mpg.

For that money you are looking at BMW powered units on both the 3.0ltr diesel and 4.4 petrol.Weak points on the diesel are the injectors.Problem areas to look for are.

Front Diffs(both models)Turn from left to right.Any sign of clonk or snatching then the diffs on its way out.Its the splines on the shaft that where. The only way to cure is new diff.

Alternators petrol models.

Heated electric tilt steering wheel(where fitted)

These are the more common failures, but also check the normal electrics and buttons and make sure everything works,as parts on these are considerably more expensive than the previous P38.

The diesel in that age of Rangie is the TD6 NOT V6. It's the BMW 3-litre straight six lump.

As I said on the previous thread (about half way down the page):

"Assuming you're talking recent models, then the 4.4 V8 will net around an average of 19mpg whilst being substantially swifter and smoother than the 3.0 diesel which with a following wind may manage 22 or 23..... For us, doing around 10k a year in the car, the inflated price of diesel and the pitiful economy gains were enough to solidify our thoughts and damn the dealers - so we bought a V8 privately. Lovely beast."

The 4.4 BMW engine is very sprightly, with plenty of poke for most occasions. The TD6, whilst being torquey is less accomplished either off the line or overtaking. I stand by the above quote - considering the cost difference and the negligible economy benefit, not to mention the lower buying price, I'd still buy a V8 over a diesel.

May seem trivial on the face of it, on the Range Rover, its not.

Its a hugely expensive part that I believe has its own cooling system.

I considered the diesel, but having driven my bosses decided that I had to have the V8. For the sake of a couple of MPG (I get on average 19.5 from my petrol, whereas he gets around 21.5 from his Diesel), I just couldn't live with the sacrifice in performance associated with the diesel. Plus, with diesel being c. 10p / litre more expensive than 95, there are no real wallet gains to be made.

21.5 seeems very very low. I return 26.1 over the last 20,000 miles. city and country driving. Mainly spirited!

a colleague with a 4.4 petrol returns approx hal what i get, 70% city and 30% motorway.

the V8 is cheaper second hand, plus theres the obvious advantage of not being able to walk faster unlike the diesel. just to add i dont think there is such thing as a manual L322 thier all autos, good luck finding one, i was really considering buying one but ive decided it wouldnt be the best move for me now.

OK thanks guys for your very helpful feedback.
I must admit I would like to go back to a V8 (had a TVR Chimaera)
So it could be hang the expense, and go for the V8 biggrin

By the way my P&J is going up on Pistonheads in the next few hours if anyone fancies a very nice Mercedes SL 320. cry

Why not buy a V8 then multi-point LPG it? Best of both worlds smile
