Does anyone know if there is an advantage of USB over a traditional keyboard and mouse socket? I realise that USB can power glowing lights or extra USB sockets etc, but as for the actual operation of the keyboard, is there any advantage of going USB in favour of a traditional socket?

Some modern machines are dropping PS2, so that's a pretty good reason to go with USB devices smile
I doubt there is any difference in operation though.

Not really, on some older motherboards you can't use USB input devices in the BIOS but that's the only difference I'm aware of.

It has to be a pretty old machine to have no USB support in bios.

You can get a faster refresh rate on USB which is better if your a FPS freak, but most people wont be able to tell the difference.

No PS2 ports just means more space on the backplate for other stuff, there isnt any other "advantage" of USB, (also cheaper for manufactuers)

Nope, very modern machine but sometime the keyboard will play up.
Have it sometimes on a work PC as well, couldn't get into BIOS on that until I used a battered old PS2 one! hehe
