Morning All,

My missus drives a 2000/W 1.8 Ford Focus Estate. She called me yesterday to say that as she was driving along she could smell burning oil, and when she pulled over she could see some kind of fumes coming through the air vents. When she opened the bonnet there was apparently a fair bit of smoke coming from around the oil filler cap. She has recently topped the oil up, but reliably informs me that she used a funnel to top it up and didn't spill any in the engine bay.

I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what the cause and fix may be. I have checked the oil filler cap and there is no "mayonaise", so I don't think it is the head gasket, but I may be wrong.

Any input and advise is greatly appriciated.

Kind Regards

Check the level on the dipstick. If it is overfilled there is a possibility of oil getting into the inlet tract via the cam cover breather.

Did she top it up level to the top of the filler neck? :P

It's been done before xD

Note: this wasn't meant in a sexist way.

And to answer your question, overfilling is my guess.
