GTO gearbox swap

Lots of US cars carry that name, as well as some Jap cars, which are obviously quite different.
I know a friend had to repair an auto on these a couple of times ( removed and sent to a specialist for repair ) horrible cars to work at, and seem to be quite unreliable.
It was a few years ago, but I do recall it being quite expensive....not only for the box, but the overall repair, due to the amount of labour involved.
ie, not hundreds in total....a grand or two.
Id imagine a manual would be cheaper...perhaps. But they are rare.
