I am seriously considering chopping in my Nissan Navara and buying a Range Rover (51 plate onwards) instead.

Ideally i'm looking to spend 15-20k and am unsure if I should get a diesel (3.0l) or petrol. At this budget I'm looking at a high miler(ish) so is there anything I should be particularly careful of with this in mind?

What are the benefits of the diesel over the petrol (if any) or vice versa? running costs, performance etc - I expect to do about 10k per year max and that you be a mix of town and motorway driving.

Additionally what are the main differences between the HSE and Vogue?

Is there anything I should really look for when viewing them?

Sorry for all the questions.

Your budget should get you a good petrol. After a bit of negotiation, I bought my 04 plate V8 Vogue with 32k miles from a Range Rover main dealer for £21k in January.

The diesel is a little more economical than the petrol (diesel averages around 22 / 23mpg whereas the petrol averages around 18 / 19mpg. The additional cost of diesel at the pumps pretty much wipes this economy advantage out though. The performance between the 2 engines is light years apart, but this can be sorted by chipping the diesel.

The differences between HSE and Vogue spec are roughly:

  • Vogue has heated seats (front & rear)
  • Vogue has a heated steering wheel
  • Vogue has much, much better seats
  • HSE doesn't come with satnav as a standard fit IIRC, whereas Vogue does (mind you, it's not all that great anyway!)
For me, the biggest difference was the seats. The Vogue basically has the front seats from a 7 series BMW and combined with the driving position, they are the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in.

Thanks Alex. Out of interest which dealer did you buy yours through? (PM me if you like) as it's seems a good price.
