Hi, i have just bought a focus rs and although im happy with the car and the proformance im already looking for a power upgrade! I have thought about a larger turbo, chipping a new intercooler and a new exhaust which would put the power up to around 350bhp. although this is good im worried about traction and torque stearing. so rather then doing that i thought about a cosworth 4x4 conversion to make my FRS a 4 weel drive monster! is this a good idea and if any one has done this before how hard was it and what problems did you come across as i only have basic skills and want to know if its worth it!!biggrin

My best suggestion would be to register on the www.passionford.com forum & have a look in the projects / restoration section as there are a couple of guys there that have gone the 4 x 4 cosworth route - Andrew Gallacher being the main guy but Steve Scott of A1 Rallyesport has also done this conversion.

However you may want to think hard before going down the 4 x 4 route with a Focus RS mainly as it is a limited build car - everyone else who has done the cosworth conversion on a focus has done it off a standard focus shell & then converted it as it was much less expensive that buying an FRS for the same work.

For ideas on tuning the FRS without going the 4x4 route register on http://bbs.rsownersclub.co.uk and have a look in the Focus RS section - general turbo conversions are either a GT25 hybrid which will see you over 300bhp or a GT28 conversion which again will increase power quite nicely past 300bhp smile

If your going the 4x4 route it is a complete transplant of a cossie setup into the focus engine, gearbox, custom tunnel for gearbox, strengthening shell, etc, etc

Hi

If you after 4x4 cosworth power, i would sell the RS and buy yourself a cheap 3dr focus and get a conversion done. Andrew Gallagher and A1 Rally sport are the 2 places to speak to about the conversion.

I have a FRS with 320bhp, GT28 turbo conversion. I find it better to drive than a chipped up standrard turbo. The stanadrd turbo chipped will always spike on the power curve then tail off at high revs. The Bigger turbo has a more progressive power curve and pulls all the way to the red line.

4x4 the standard engine is possible, but has never been done and would cost a fortune and devalue the RS. The only way i can think i could be done is to use a EVO gearbox and transfer box and have a custom bell housing made. But if you want big power the first option is the best way.

I've seen a Rallycross 4x4 Focus Cosworth Mk1. The previous owner had abandoned the project as he couldn't get it sorted, he'd got the Cossie running gear in, including the motor (mounted as per normal Cossie) but couldn't get the concept to do what he wanted - ie, win races. He thought the extra width of the Focus shell would be useful for going found corners but it turned out that the extra weight slowed him down more on the straight bits. In short, he blew way too much on it.

The guy I saw the car with recieved it as a part-ex on an Escort Cossie he had & then sold it on to a hill climb chap - the car was still way too heavy even then.

If you really want a 4wd Cossie, buy a real 1 - it's cheaper in the long run & faster.

+1.

They're quite rare in comparison as it is.

Get a Sierra Cossie IMO... much more value for money.
