Having the GTR in the paint shop at the moment got a phone call this am to inform me the doors are two skins bonded togeather, and that they were splitting at the top hinge and by the shut catch (photos to follow) and the shop was a bit surprised at this, considering the car was an 03 and had only covered 3000 miles and suggested I call Ultima to see if they would do anything towards the cost of the repair, well you can guess the answer, I am interested to know if anybody else has a similar problem. Oh I was informed it must be down to abuse ie slamming the door shut, never happens. To be honest I am totally p155ed of with the whole Ultima experience now, with reference to black streaks in the gell coat, broken gearboxes after 900 miles, door skins splitting, and others, these cars are in excess of £50k to build yourself and there seems to be no after sales whatsoever with the problems in quality of the product, which pop up. The extortionate prices from the factory ie tyre valves £8 each + p+p + vat = £45 they are only £12 a set of 4 from Deamon Thieves.
I was a die hard Ultima fan for years and finally achieved my dream in 2006
but now totally disillusioned.

Sorry to hear you have problems Russ. You know that the Ultima is the dogs b**locks and I'm sure that you can fix whatever problems you have, especially if CanAm Dave is on hand !

As I have said before (although it will be no use to you) I have had no issues with the kit and the factory have always been more than helpful. Did you buy your kit from the Factory or did you buy your cars privately ? I can see why the factory don't support "second hand sales" - my vectra threw its valves after 300 miles from a second hand car dealer and despite being under warranty I could not convince Vauxhall to sort it. If had bought it from Vauxhall they would have a case to answer.

Whatever the problems, get yourself out in (one of your two) motors asap - how about a meet up with Kyle and Dave and a quick pint ?

Just spotted this on the company website:

The Ultima is, and always will be, the only car for me. Shaking as I opened the garage doors, jumped in, fired her up and brought her out into the lovely sunshine, 80 miles later after blowing a few cobwebs away, the performance was almost better than sex (lasted longer). You will never regret it, after all you can't take the money with you, and there is no point in being the richest man in the graveyard, GET IT SPENT, buy an Ultima.

Thanks Garry and Tony but I don't have any running issues with the cars they both run as sweet as a nut, and I still think they are the best thing since sliced bread, its the attitude from the factory with substandard products that has ticked me off, Tony I know you built yours with all factory parts but when the black streaks start to show through your gell coat, in a couple of years, let me know what there responce is then, and why if the factory know about the wheels rubbing the front light cover, don't they replace them foc, or discounted ? wheel nuts, we all know the chrome flakes off, there are other issues out there but nobody has the balls to say anything about it. gearboxes spring to mind. Ultima is a small company producing probably the most expensive kit car out there, so they should be looking after the second hand buyer as well as the new build, and taking on board some of your/our suggestions on how to improve the car from people with experience of building the cars which will enable an even better product for the next potential kit purchaser, EFI comes to mind, how long has that taken ?

You know what, f**k it!

Hi Russ,

I think most Ultima owners come up against 'challenges' to their enjoyment. I've come up against a few, some self inflicted, some not. But it's all the more sweeter when those bridges are crossed (the hump-backed ones being the best, coz you don't know what's on the other side!!biggrin)

Have you considered getting shot of just one of the cars (I see there are now two ads in the classifieds which might be yours). By my rough calculations (and I'm sure Crafty can pick me up on this if my maths are out), you could cut your woes by 50%, and still have 100% Ultima ownership pleasure!!

Obviously it's the Can-Am that would need to go......wink

Best of luck with it mate.

Thanks Peter, you were right in the 1st place, you can have too much of a good thing. When the body shop called yesterday and told me about the door skins splitting and the reaction from Mr Marlow, threw me over the top.
Andy you were right also, I think your words were (don't expect any favours from the factory)
There was a thread way back, about being Black Balled ! shouldn't pass onto the new owners though, ah well life goes on,

Atom, me thinks, that will please the wife as her skirt blows around her head at 100mph, must remind her to wear knickers though.

Really, why?

Maybe 2nd hand prices whould be a bit higher if there was more support.
And not there well YOU did not buy that from us directly so we can only support the orignal buyer.

But at the end of the day they want to sell new cars

Can't see how they can support a 2nd hand car if they didn't build it, unless they carried out a lengthy inspection and who would pick up the bill?

I agree... at the end of the day its not like a normal production car is it?

Have to say i find this whole thread a bit wierd.. if the door is coming apart it really couldnt be much work to put it back together again? its only glass fibre after all? - seems odd to sell the car/s just for that?!
so far everything i have got from the factory seems nicely made/finished? - havent got the bodywork yet but looking around it at the shows always looks really good?
The factory have been helpful everytime we have spoken (allthough thats not too much to be fair)
highflyer they must be doing something right if you bought 2???!

Graeme (V8owner) you are correct it isn't a big job to repair the door skins, (being done by a proffesional fiberglass body shop at the moment) my argument is that they shouldn't have split in the 1st place considering the Ultima is supposed to be of such a high standard of quality kit, and I am not selling for that reason.
the cars that I bought, I spoke to the builders and you get a feeling for these things, I know the quality of workmanship that went into them, and the attention to detail is better than the factory would have done. As you must know yourself ?
Why 2 ? well I wanted the best of both worlds, as I loved the whole Ultima thing, but as the title suggests am now disillusioned

deadscoob, these cars arn't very old, and usually have low milage on them so when I suggest they should support the 2nd hand car, I am not talking about mechanicly, I am refering to the substandard parts they supply, to enable you to build the car.
Oh Its about £1000 + for a factory inspection and about £40 from the RAC and obviously the new buyer picks up the bill.
Streaks in the gell coat, doors splitting, headlamp covers, wheel nuts flaking etc etc and of course the extortinate parts prices.

So how about just getting shot of one and making a beast outta the other? Is it the GTR at the paint shop? Go mad and paint it silver or graphite or even lime (next year's orange). Go on Russ!!
