i have lost 5th gear on my 405 and am looking for a replacement gearbox and while im at it going to replace the turbo too, are the gearboxes and turbos the same on all vechicles with the XUD9 T engine e.g,306,405,406,Xantia?, also how much of a pain to do am i looking at roughly?, its at times like these i wish they were RWD.

Get the gearbox repaired 5th gear is under the end plate this can be done with the gearbox in the car easy job Access from behind n/s/f wheel save a lot of work
Has for turbo why change it if its ok these are bullet proof on the xud engine

i might look into getting the gearbox repaired but thought it might be cheaper just to put another one in it, the turbo is whining, so think the splines are on the way out, can get another one from a scrapyard for £50 so just going to bolt another one in so i wont be worrying about it going bang.

Trouble is you dont know what you are buying secondhand I would think you pay around 100+ pounds for a old gearbox
New fifth gear wont cost that and you havent got all that work

Turbo's come in a fair few varieties, best ones are on late 306 td's.

You need the exhaust manifold though, maybe the oil feed, and the compressor feed pipe.


My brother and I are working on an Mi16 > Td conversion at the moment, aiming for 140-145bhp and 210lbft smile

Not sure on the 5th gear, but sounds like an in-car job is ok for 5th maybe smile

Got a 405 Mi16 with my brother, intention was to have it for giggles.

Had GTi6 manifold, PTFE gasket, different injectors, upped rev limit, plans for cat cams, but we just lost interest with petrol prices rising, and the cost of parts was high, and generally it was just alot of the fun of doing it in other people's hands.

So, we've sourced a very late Xantia 1.9 Td engine, a late Bosch fuel pump (from a Citroen), because they used the better Bosch ones longer than Peugeot, a late kkk03 turbo and manifold, we have the gearbox already, fuel tank, dash (diesel rpm gauge) etc...


My brother got this...



The 405 will have a fatter exhaust and less silencing, an intercooler with about 4x the capacity, and it'll be front mounted, we can run a bit more boost, and we are also sourcing some superior injectors (not much) that will allow us to run more fuelling, and also a few tweaks to the Bosch pump itself.

All in we are hoping to reach 145-150bhp, but even with 140bhp we will be pretty happy because it'll still be as fast as a 2.0 Mi16 but with loads more mpg, and it's just different and fun, and keeping a car on the road (car is in great nick for age, mk2, full half leather, feels like it's 4 years old, not 15, but the engine had been neglected)


Either way, these engines have plenty of potential. The late turbo's get going much earlier in the rev range with a little tune up, my old 405 Td used to get going from 2000rpm, and feel like it was giving it's best at 2750rpm, but the smaller turbo's make that more like 1750 > 2250rpm...

ive got the gearbox and turbo out of another 1994 405, i assume the turbo will be the same as mine and i wont need the mainfolds etc, just the gaskets related to the turbo.

No, I'm pretty sure all the 405 turbo's are the same I/O fitments (ie, exhaust out, exhaust manifold, feed pipe and intercooler feed pipe)

Found them bits fast.

My brother and I are looking for old 405 Td's at the moment just for spares, so damn cheap!

Sounds like an interesting project, have been looking to replace my MI with something a little more economical!

How far have you got with the project so far?

Nothing really in the car yet, just all out and building the engine up outside the car and prepping the engine bay etc...

When it starts going together, hopefully by the weekend, it should be running a day or so later.

Then it's just sort the windscree (cracked), then an MOT, then we are away biggrin

ive had 2 and both have run on it fine, the trick is to put too high of mix in first time, with the weather now you would be ok sarting on 50-50 then slowly change it, in the summer months you could run 100% veg but when its not as warm go for a mix like 75% veg, 20% diesel and 5% unleaded to thin it down.
