Guys, i have seen some conflicting summeries regarding the Oil Temp in the 205 Gti XU engine. As far as i was aware, the oil temp reading is taken from the sensor in the rear of the sump (1991 engine). This relays the signal to the dash which operates the top right gauge.

Sorry about the basic question but people and articals have made me question my own experience and now i'm having problems with it i have doubt about were to start.

The sensor is in the sump more or less directly underneath the lower engine mounting that also houses the DS intermediate bearing.

What is the problem that you are actually getting? The wire from the sensor is in an exposed position but should, in theory, be proteced by a plastic outer sleeve. If you're not getting a reading or the reading is fluctuating wildly then replacing the wire back to the point at which it exits the loom may be worth trying (you should be able to test this by getting someone to watch the guauge as you "fiddle" with the cable).

Just stopped working. Was going to have a go last weekend but decided i wasn't sure and didn't want to waste my time on the wrong thing. I 'll have a go with the wiring and see what happens.

Cheers

Yep, it's the sensor on the back of the sump.

The wiring from the sensor goes through a brown multi-plug connector that lurks under the thermostat and is infamous for corroding and causing problems. I'd look there if the wire's still attached to the sender on the sump.

Both of my GTis have bust this wire round the back of the engine. A quick peek underneath my reveal all as both of mine have draged on the ground if it bust.

Eaisest fix is to run a whole new length of wire with a new ring connect from the brown multiplug to the sensor. Once you've cut the wire to the correct length, fit it inside shrink-wrap heat insulation and give it a good go over with a hairdryer. Two major problems - the wire is very exposed to heat and engine movement, causing it to dry and break. The thread on the sensor is very weak and it's easy to sheer it if you don't take care. No real issue though if it doesn't work - you'd have to really be working the engine over a prolonged period to get the oil to go off the scale. Besides, the oil pressure is much more of a concern.

Agreed! Thats guys, i am going to get under there tomorrow and sort it out. As for oil pressure, all is well! Middle line on tick over, 3rd line at full belt - Was told this was within acceptable limits???

Sounds good, that's what I get from my 8v and that had a refresh before going in some 5 years ago.
