99T Focus Air Conditioning.

I'm in Pakistan at the minute but while away the girlfriends Focus has had a fault.
She smelt burning rubber and when calling the AA man out he said that the air con was shot. HE also said that you shouldn't leave it on all the time, which to me is rubbish as in the Merc it is on nearly everytime I drive it.
So, could this be a clutch which is needed for it, or are they prone to a different fault?
She isn't too worried about it but personally if it is on the car i'd want it working, she will definitely feel the benefits in the summer.
Any ideas Ford Folk?
