We have recently set up a new company and need to send out letters with samples for potential clients to see. The letter we include outlines what the company does etc and is sent after we have already spoken to the potential client.

Anyway, we used to work for a company that did exactly the same thing, and therefore we have access to their old letters etc.

I was just wondering where the law stands on us basically copying their letter?? We have re-written it with quite a few little differences, but at the end of the day both companies are in the same line of business, and therefore even if we totally re-wrote the letter it would be bound to say a similar thing.

So is copywrite law applicable to 'promotional letters' and if so, how many changes are required to stop it infringing said laws?

Copyright text is very easy to get around, by, like you say changing the odd word here and there (the more the better)

Not a lot they can do about it.
