Does anyone know how I can tell what gearbox I have-it's attached to a Ford crossflow?
I want to check the oil!

Thanks, John.

It could be one of several.

If it's a 4-speed, if you're lucky it will be a 2000E 'Bullet' or a Type E 'Rocket' box. If the car was built on a budget, you might find its just a plain Type 3 (easily identified because it has an integral bellhousing).

If it's 5 speed, it's most likely to be either the Type 9 or perhaps the MT75, from the Sierra.

There's a fairly good visual identification guide here.

Very useful tahnks, I need to get out there and do the visuals.Does it actually have a dip stick or does the filler act as the level marker? I reckon I have the Type 9. Thanks, John.
p.s. I gather that I should expect a little oil on the drive due to its age.

Filler acts as the level marker on almost all gearboxes... I can't think of any that use a dipstick.

Cheers for that-sorry for the delayed response!
