Ok guy's, no doubt someone is going to have answer to this little conundrum...

I’m currently working on a 1991 1.9 (Non Cat) 205 Gti. It’s got 120K on the clock but in general, everything is in good condition. When collected last year it was a non-runner. After various ECU’s, AFM’s etc… she started running and after various methods of investigation, we have found a nice cam sat on top. We are finally reaching the final stages of completion, ready for a summer of south coast sun but at the moment, I don’t dare take it outside in fear of killing the rain forest! It stinks to high heaven of unleaded but all the time, not just when it’s warming up. She hasn’t been run too hard or for an extended amount of time since I brought her but I have given it enough to know she runs well enough once above 2500rpm. wink

Can anyone point me in the right direction? What should I be looking at/for that would be causing it? It’s defiantly not a line leaking or the exhaust; I’ve checked all of that and remade/replaced anything that was a suspect device. The air filter is new, as is the throttle body and all the unions are good so I’m sure there isn’t a vacuum leak anywhere.

t got to the stage yesterday morning were I had replaced the metal water pipe, refilled and bleed the air out, ran it up and then had to leave half hour later because the fumes gave me a hangover headache but 1 million times worst!

Any ideas/pointers/suggestions would be great! Ta

Petrol fumes or exhaust fumes?

My mate used to have a 1.4 205 and that gave us all headaches untill he had it tuned up.

I was going to say O2 sensor, but if it's a non cat there wouldn't have been one...is it possible you fitted an ECU from a later car with a cat?

Exhaust Fumes - Stinks of fuel but runs fine. The ECU came off a 1990 non cat (Friends retired gti). It is going into the garage for MOT in May, i think i'll ask the guy (Old next door neighbour wink) to have a poke about with his new tuning kit and see what he comes up with. SP

Mine stinks a bit, I've never found where, my thoughts are that it's rich on idle. I'm running different cams on standard management (Motronic) which I don't think the idle likes.

Check under the rear RHS passenger seat to make sure both the covers are over the fuel pump and sender, also you'll probably notice the seal around the fuel cap is a little worn.

I have had a word with the Mech, he reckons Simes is right, Rich on Idle. I went through the last emmisions sheet with him and he is slightly concerned with the 0.011 CO reading which could be connected due to over fueling and not being able to burn all the fuel in the cylinder. Would explain the stink and also the consumption on idle (I.E 30mins of Idle = £5+ fuel.)

The engine temperature sensors (blue plug on the back of the head under the dizzy) are a common problem and result in over-fuelling. Either that or a duff AFM. Or a wiring fault to either or both. These systems are so simple there's bugger all else that can go wrong.

My hydrocarbons are roughly 4000ppm on idle, however the CO passes. The MOT tester is allowed to rev it to 2000rpm where upon they are 45!!

The ECU temp sensor can make a difference, noticable in the winter. Mine failed a few years ago and my mpg dropped from 30 to 22.
