My clutch has gone "soft" today, so I cannot engage gears easily in my S2. I suspect the clutch needs bleeding, probably due to a small fluid leak in either the master or slave cylinders.

Q1. Where is the slave cylinder located, and is it easly to reach to bleed ?

Q2. If the slave cylinder seals have gone, what parts do I get from the local motor factors? I guess standard 1989 Ford Granada 2.9 should be correct.

Lovely day out, and I am in the Vauxhaull, aarrgghh!

Yes you should...

You will learn that Fords tend to have cable clutches... Asking for a clutch cylinder for an 89 Ford Granny will probably have you carted away by men in white coats. The slave is next to the clutch bell housing under the car.

Seal kits are available from Lucas service centres and from Rimmer Bros www.rimmerbros.co.uk/

Part numbers are
Clutch master cylinder seal kit - Lucas SP 2102
Clutch slave cylinder seal kit - Lucas SP 4190

Good Luck

Thanks for the Lucas info. Hopefully bleeding it will suffice for the immediate term, but I feel a seal overhaul will need to be done soon.

Steve, yes I am logging on now to buy the bible.

You'll need to get the car quite high on stands to get to the slave cylinder. Additionally, the pipe and bleed nipple are vertically arranged on the cylinder, with the nipple at the top , all in a dirty restricted space.

Just wanted to help you mentally prepare!

Sounds like hours of fun. I will be preparing myself by having a few pots of ale tonight, which I am sure will put this in a different light tomorrow.

Looking forward to scraped knuckles and getting covered in oil.

I found that to remove the slave cylinder, required two people, one with access from the top to hold a spanner on the bolts whilst the other one lies underneath to undo the nuts.

Check out a similar thread from about a week ago for tips on bleeding.

The Master Cyl was straight forward enough apart from the usual upside down in the footwell waving your legs in the air routine. (always enjoy that one)

Good Luck

Fixed the problem. There was very little oil in the resovoir, and there was black muck on all surfaces. I cleaned it up, and filled it, and the clutch worked enough to move the car. Then I went under the car to bleed the slave cylinder. This had been replaced about 2 years ago, and yes, the bleed nipple was on the bottom. So I removed the slave and re-assembled it with the nipple at the top. Bled the system, getting all of the old black oil out, and it works a treat. Changes gear lovely.

No sign of any oil leaks, so I can only guess that the resovoir had not been kept topped up. So much for regular servicing in the past.

Thanks for all you help guys.

Good news. All's well that ends well.
