AVG 8 or even the older 7.5 gets my vote. Used AVG for years, without any viruses or any problems at all.

I have just reloaded AVG 8 after using the COMODO suite.

Its alot less in your face, if you see what i mean.

An interesting article on MSN today about antivirus software and the conclusion was AVG. However, dont expect it to stop you getting any virus' it is just less processor intensive than the others. The only real solution is dont use the internet!

I know what you mean! It is a pain when installing or reinstalling stuff.

Also Avasts interface is not so intuitive.

avast doesnt slow your PC down as much as AVG, I used to use AVG for about 4 years then 2 years ago switched to avast on reccomendation of a guy who I worked with in holland who was in charge of R&D at the gaming company i worked for.

never looked back and now I change at least 2 people from the free avg product to the free avast product each week.

avast is specifically good for power users, gamers, etc, as it hardly touches any of your rescourses, unlike avg.

Another one in the 'Avast' camp here. I also use COMODO firewall (not the AV) and it can be a little irritating once it's initially set up - very 'paranoid'. But then I quite like that, and it's settled down over time. Seems to be a very good combo.

I use Avast!, but only because it sounds like a pirate talking...
Used AVG for years without any issues, now use Avast without any issues.

Both good but i prefer Avast. Not as CPU intensive as AVG.

AVG never picked up anything the whole time I had it - Sophos is much better, it found a couple of things, and now brings up quite a few suspicious items - even if they are ok, at least I know it is doing something.

Another vote for Avast, I used AVG for quite a while with no problems, but I did a home pc rebuild a few weeks ago and thought I'd try something different, and it just seems like a better piece of software. But in all honesty you won't go far wrong with either.

agree with the above, both are good. AVG and AVAST.. Although AVAST did want me to register.. and then re-register after a period of being free..

I'm tempted to swap back to AVG.. Esp. if 8 is less processor intensive.

AVAST seems to use less processor initially, but I'm not sure about overall.. It's probably negligible if your PC has a bit of grunt and memory.

OT but what do people think about McAfee??

Have never even heard of Avast but I do use AVG and have done for a couple of years without any problems or viruses smile

Paying for something that free things do just as well? Seems to take over systems in my experience rather than just sitting out the way like AVG and Avast do.

AVG user for years and switched to Avast too. Put it on a Vista laptop and it worked for about 2-3 months and it was handed back to me the other day as it was running very slow. Played around with it and finally took off Avast and it was back to normal speed. Stuck on AVG 8.0 and all is well.

No idea was it specific to the laptop or Vista tbh as I've no time for vista yet. Anyone else have similar problems?

I went from AVG to Avast too, seems to use less resources and also picked up a virus AVG didn't see.

As for registering you have to renew your registration on a yearly basis but it's free to re-register. Just fill out the form on the homepage

Hmmm... I seem to have the same issue.. It seems like it's slowed down on me, after being initially quite quick... Might switch back over to AVG 8 and see what that does..
