Wasn't too sure where to post this, but thought you knowledgeable guys were as good a place to start as any.

Basically, as above. Any thoughts on whether you could convert a 2CV to take a bike engine?

I think the 2CV is front wheel drive, so would this be a non starter straight away? If not, it may be possible (ala the Mini) to put the engine in the back?

I'd love some thoughts on this please.

If you can fit a V8 in a 2CV, you can certainly stick a bike engine in it... it's just a case of how much effort you want to go to!

You would need an adaptor plate, but a 2Cv can take a Moto guzzi engine, or a BMW boxer .

Check the Pembleton 3 wheeler or the new Blackjack Zero with a Guzzi engine,

Well don't expect to put that much power to the citroen chassis.
I know a guy that put a BMW boxer on the chassis, but more power than that and
the chassis will kill it self.

Yes, we've heard the chassis is a bit on the weak side.

After a bit ot thought, I think we're going to take the shell off, strengthen the chassis (how - we don't quite know yet) install a transmission tunnel and make it rear engined. Hoping a Fireblade engine will do the trick. smile

So after reading up on your plans everything looks clear to me except one thing: WHY???

The 2cv chassis won't be strong enough front or rear to hold a bike engine, the rear is just 2 thin chassis legs, maybe 1" by 2" and if you are lucky a cross bar on the rechassis'd cars. I know 2cvs very well, raced em, rechassis'd em and rebuilt em. Bespoke chassis all the way!

Why?

Because it will be different.

This car is being built for one purpose only. Le Mans 2009. It will be resprayed in Gulf livery (not so original) It will then be an epic road trip in the most random car you ever did lay eyes on.

It's also getting a custom interior celebrating Le Mans biggrin

Just for fun basically.

That's what were affraid of, I did speak to a gentleman who works with them, and he suggested getting a 7 esque chassis, dropping the shell on it, welding a cage in, then removing the excess.

It'll be a steep learning curve.

I am sorry to piss on your parade thewave, but the Gulf thing has been done, about 10-12 years ago on a 2cv race car.

Hence I put "not so original"

I am fully aware that the 2CV is common, and more than likely to be 'Gulfed' at some point. However, this will be a very different and fun 2CV, and that is our sole aim.

Unless anyone has any better ideas?

Just build it but make your own basic chassis frame instead of making things difficult in converting a 2cv chassis. My 2 cents.

No better ideas, I think the 2CV one is fine - especially if it's a one off for a trip to Lemons.

I'd probably go a bit further - do something daft like chop the roof down to 6 inches biggrin piss easy on those as all the glass is flat.

Chassis... hmmm depends how much effort you want to go to - while I am fully aware of the... "shortcomings" of the 2CV chassis, there is no reason some simple tube bracing and triangulation cannot be used to beef it up enough, depends what you are going to do with it afterwards of course - if it's something you are going to hold on or intend to sell for proper money, go for a spaceframe, if not, why bother?!

We did consider doing an A-Team/Mystery Machine (Scooby Doo) Transit, but the 2CV fitted the French theme, and we decided we wanted to build something that related to Le Mans, but 29bhp just isn't an option on such a long journey!

Go for it!! I had a 2CV as my first car!! all my mates had minis etc, me being into bikes and being given the car simply rebuilt the engine. gas flowed head, lost most of fly wheel! custom exhuast (2" stainless tube out under side door) by end of it no mini could beat me to 60mph, top speed 120mph, only trouble was stopping. good luck, beer
