Folks,

I'm considering not buying my E46 M3 from a dealer and getting a private or indy car.

I realize that this is risky, as the bits are expensive to fix, but I'm trying to weight the possibility of this happening, with the substantial premium that a BMW AUC car commands.

There was a post over on mtorque about a chap with a blown engine, I was curious how much it has cost him to source a new one, but I don't think that he's got anything sorted yet.

The worst case scenario is a new engine I guess, & I know from BMW, a new engine is about £14k, but does anyone have experience of sourcing a second hand/reconditioned engine?

Cheers

Can't you have the BMW warranty even if you buy it outside of the BMW AUC?

As long as you renew the warranty each year and keep to the servicing schedule at a BMW approved indie, then you should be fine?

I'm in exactly the same boat. I'm happy to buy privately providing the car has existing warranty.

Read the same post regarding the blown engine but mileage on that one is over 100k and IIRC a very early car? Is slightly worrying but content with hearing the "odd" horror story especially as I've just left Impreza ownership. Despite the "budget for a new engine" brigade I never had any issues with two Subarus in 8 years and both were modified.

The problem is finding a car with the warranty still in-tact. BMW are very strict and even if you let it lapse for one day, you cannot 'reapply' it [I believe that porsche will let you reapply a lapsed warranty if you pay for the car to be brought up to their 'AUC' standard.

It's also expensive (which is why most cars don't have it!). BMW want £1000 per year [+ £250 excess / claim] - which on top of insurance and your £400 per year tax, means it's a pricey car to own! WarrantyDirect will give you a warranty for £800 per year, no excess, claim limit = Value of the car, but they insist on > 2003 car and < 60000 miles.

Its not hard to find a car with the BMW extendid warranty, if fact you will find most enthusiasts will have kept it up.
With regard to the price of BMWs warranty you are wrong. BMW have just restructured the prices and if you do a search on MTorque you will find the new prices which are now on a sliding scale.

Hmm - may I respectfully disaggree? I called imc-bmw - they said that none of their cars have the extended warranty - once the standard one expires - they do not extend.

I also polled a few cars that were for sale privately, none of the owners had kept the warranty up. Accept that I could have been unlucky - but I did try 3 or 4 of the 'best looking' cars in the PH classified.

I saw one car [black one, up in aberdeen] that had it - but that was pretty rare.

Avoid IMC - search the Mtorque forms for discussion.
Cars with warranty are about, but if you want an M3 to a particular spec, mileage & price plus the extended warranty, then you may be digging for a while.
There is a nice 38k mile full spec cab with 12 mths BMW warranty in the classifieds wink

I agree
Like the old saying goes "you get what you pay for"
They do come up at Main dealers now and again and these will come with AUC warranty although you will pay a bit more.
Shop around as well, try MTorques for sale section. They are out there but you will have to pay for a good one. I did. Took me a while and paid a little bit more than expected but I will be keeping the warranty up and it is fully loaded. Its worth the wait.

I can see your concerns, however this is a BMW and it's one of the strongest engines out there, just buy post 2003,there are four criteria when buying an M3, 1/ condition, 2/ history, 3/ history and 4/ history.

The blown engine on MTorque is a very early model I think that it may even be "y" reg with 100K and gets driven like it was stolen. Thorney Motor Sport purchased 160K miler from one of their customers and now use it as their race car, need I say more!

If you do buy AUC and you don't have a P/ex just walk in with the bold statement that you have come to buy a car, now, today, and offer 2k off the screen price, better still tell them you are coming over the phone, and tell them you want to negotiate, and go in at the end of the month or quarter.

I have done this with great success with both BMW and Jaguar, it won't work with Ford or Nissan not enough money in their cars.

It's quite safe to buy private if you just follow all the usual rules, most large stock Indys are just as expensive as AUC.

The E46 M3 is the best peformance per pound buy at the moment, grab one and your only regret will be that you did not do so sooner.

Best of Luck

yup, sorry - I need 4 seats, I know I won't make any friends saying this, but if I was going to get a two seater, then I'd be getting an S2000 :-)

That one feels a tad overpriced, no SMG, no central armrest, no heated seats, no satnav, 18" rims, the drivers seat leather looks in terrible condition, and potentially an insp2 in 6000 miles, although the seller has not explained which one is coming up. You can find far better examples for that money
