mgb gt mk1 radiator surround fitting problem

are all mgb gt radiator surrounds the same? because i have just purchased a good secondhand one and when put into position with it resting on the inner wings the whole thing is a good one inch to high making it impossible to close the bonnet, looking at the old one that i took off i can see that its had arround one inch sawn off the slope where it rests on the inner wings and new mounting holes drilled, its like the inner wings are to high for this surround.
any ideas andrew.
