how much to modify?
Discussion
i think i shall finally pull my thumb out and weld up my disco this week. at the moment it is in boring standard road spec. but i want to destroy lincolnshire with it so I would like to know rough costs to buy and possibly fitting of the following items so i can plan what i will and won't do to it.
2" lift kit
diff guards
steering guard
snorkle and diff/box breathers
really loud exhaust pipes, i didn't get a V8 for nothing.
winch bumpers, (but not neceserally a winch yet)
AT or MT tires.

2" lift kit - £250 for parts about an hour a corner to fit
diff guards - £20 each 5 mins to fit
steering guard - About £75 get one with recovery eyes about half hour to fit
snorkle and diff/box breathers - mushroom top about £70, safari type £120, couple of hours to fit.For breathers, just get some tube from B&Q for irrigation kits and make your own about a fiver not the £40 "kit" off ebay
really loud exhaust pipes, i didn't get a V8 for nothing - I like the sound of the Janspeed but they are not cheep. Stainless sports exhausts seem to be around the £500 mark
winch bumpers, (but not neceserally a winch yet) - about £250 and an hour to fit
AT or MT tires about 100 for bfgs a corner or a bout £650 for a set on new steel wheels.
i'm prepared to spend lots of money to stop the expensive bits breaking. i.e the engine and diffs. i've already had to change the gearbox once and that wasn't really heavy, it was fking heavy!
at the moment i won't be throwing it at 1 in 3 slopes, but i want it to be more than capable on the brown stuff.

Consider 235/85 tyres and a "camel cut" with your 2" lift and you have a good machine.
Biggest tip with a v8 is waterproof it. Get the coil covered up. Get a 5l squash bottle and cut it in half and put bottom half over dizzy. Use a bit of non setting silicon around the leads, wd40 on anything else electrical. Dont forget recovery points front and back. Think JATE rings or recovery eyes in the steering guard. Invest in some rated shackles and ropes/strops so someeone can pull you out.
JATE rings are about £20 a pair. Shackles are about a fiver and 20 quid for a strop.
Also I recommend a Hilift style jack. Get a chain and with your rope you can use it as a winch.

I decided to put some new steels / mud tyres on my defender circa £650 and so far have spent :
Wheels / Tyres 650
Chequerplate 150
Winch / Bumper 800
3 High lift jack 250 + all the bits (dont ask)
Snorkel 100
Steering guard 100
Rear tow step 25
Soft Top 250
Roll bar 200
Sticks 200
Strops etc 200
other bits 300
Waffle boards 100
Now thinking about tree sliders, 2 inch lift and bigger wheels / tyres, tank guards .....!!!!
I am not even going to add that little lot up ..... but they were expensive tyres !!!
This was meant to be a cheap landie to take rubbish to the tip / tow a trailer with
You have been warned !!!!!

I bet you want more than I can afford!
Although the Disco has been re-thought, it's going back to standard :'(
I've just acquired a 101, that and my 5.9 V8 110 (Project will be bobtailed etc) mean the Disco needs to be the family car.
Out of interest, what are you looking for, for the 404's? I know a bloke looking for a set.
You can email me at grest(at)hotmail.co.uk if you prefer.
