Hi folks, have an issue with my stage 2 escort rs turbo. Its an F reg 1988 with little mods other than the hoses and dump valve. After getting home yesterday or whilst pulling up to park, the engine cut out at idle revs. Thinking it was a one off i left it and took it for a run later, got round the road a bit and pulling up to a junction it done it again. Other than that the cars running really well. Re-tracing my steps i put petrol in in the morning and oil in just before i left work.

Previous owner said 95 ron is fine for it so thats what ive been putting in and i used the best oil i could find 0w/40 that was suitable for the car.

Ive lubed the dump valve to make sure it was shutting ok, checked the wiring etc that i may have disturbed but cannot find the problem.

Just looking for ideas as ive only had the car 2 weeks and dont know where to start, suggestions ive had so far include : adding some lead replacement to the fuel mix, wiring connection, air filter.

As ive said it only seems to be when the cars idleing, starts up fine then after a minute or so when its warmed a little cuts out again.

Cheers, Scotty

First step change the oil wont be causing cutting out but is far to thin for a cvh engine needs to be 10w 50 or similar (i used to use either castrol rs or mobil 1 motorsport)

Second sound like an air leak is very common on rst's id start by taking the dump valve off and capping the hole and if that does'nt sort it start by checking the hoses are all secure (including the little ones around the inlet manifold) if this doesnt work try gently pressing down on the metering head (part all the fuel pipes run out of) as this has a seal on the base that sometimes fails.

If still no joy get some carb cleaner start the car and keep it idleing on the throttle (might need a second person to make a bit easier) and spray the carb cleaner around all the joins (inlet manifold injectors etc) looking for a change in engine note which will indicate the cleaner is getting into the engine indicating the leak.

Hope this helps might sound long winded but is 9 times out of 10 the problem as the injection system on these cars relys on it being air tight.

Thanks for the tips neil, it was something letting air through after all......The gap between my ears!! I hadnt put the dipstick back in properly after checking the oil.

To make it worse it was the mrs who suggested it.

Woah is me, stupid, but worth while checking if anyone else has had the same problem.
