Bless 'em, great cars but as we all know crap handbrakes!

Yesterday Devon TVRCC went for lunch down to Watergate Bay in Cornwall to sample Jamie Oliver's 'Fifteen' restaurant.

Happy days! Good time was had by all.

Then we left and one of the group was met by a note on the screen..

Thanks to whoever it was, could have been a lot worse, as I say great cars, crap handbrakes! biggrin

Remember at Mallory Park some years ago;

Guy with a Tuscan watched his car roll down the paddock and T Bone'd Lee Noble's latest unregistered Noble M400 frown

Then later found out the tuscan had only just had a £3k repair done.

Guess what for?

Yes! it rolled away again, only the month before and did the same to a BMW!

Ouch! I think he left it in gear since.

and theres more

After the repair to the Noble and the Tuscan.

The Guy gets in the Tuscan one morning starts it

Yeah didn't depress the clutch!

Goes through the garage door!!!!!!

G laugh

Indeed, been there. Was working in the office one Saturday on my own, when I hear a distinct clunk from the front of the building - my car has rolled backwards and is up against the front doors (which open outwards) effectively locking me in !

Had to climb out the workshop window smile No damage to car or building thankfully.

Not just TVRs that do that. Friend of ours came over to our house in his Ferrari. Drove in through the gate up the gentle slope and parked in front of the garage. Twenty minutes later there's a knock on the front door. Neighbour of ours asked if we knew who owned the red sports car that was straddling the road outside the house. Seems that the handbrake friction was lost as the discs cooled and it gradually rolled 60 feet in a straight line out through the gate and into the road. Not a scratch anywhere.

There can't be a TVR owner who's read this and hasn't smiled to him/herself, thanks for that hehe

I was at a Capri meet once when the handbrake failed and the car rolled down the hill in the field, through the hedge and rolled end over end into the next field

Yeah...................

1. Never park on a slope.

2. If you have to park on a slope ALWAYS leave car in gear.

3. Before starting car ALWAYS check that car is in neutral.

Usually works well for me thumbup

Could it be that the note states 'your handbrake is off' - not that it has failed? Therefore to solve the problem is easy.... actually put the handbrake ON? tongue out

As he said - me too. First ever car was a Triumph Spitfire, and the handbrake only ever worked once a year for the MoT. Get used to leaving it in gear

How did the note writer know it was off? Probably assumed it was. Dangerous things, assumptions. I'd go with the brake on/discs cooled scenario above. Used to happen a lot on my Chimaeras. Always left it in gear after the first time.

Not the Tiv, but had a car up for sale some years ago, outside my Mum and Dad's while on Hols in Turkey. Got home and Dad said 'you want good news or bad news son?' Turns out my car was the only thing stopping a car that had rolled down the road from careering out onto the A127 with potentially fatal consequences.

The owners dad was a top flight coachbuilder and had repaired my car already, looked better than new. Still use him to this day, and My E-type is there now.

Anyway, not very funny, but it goes to show some handbrake stories can end in horror. Tuscan story brightened my day thoughyes

Excellent story!
When I first got a TVR one of the things the dealer said before I drove off was, 'and remember, don't trust the handbrake!'. So I never do.
A friend of mine never got that advice when he bought a Pug 306 cab. One day I arrived home to see his car parked... well, balanced at about 45 degrees on my neighbours wall. I live on a hill & said mate had come over & left his car with just the handbrake on. After about 20 minutes, it drove itself down the hill, up on to the wall (the wall was a couple of inches high at the top of the hill) & had stopped only when the step of the wall got wedged between the tubes of the chassis! By chance the only damage was a cracked front bit of boyracer bodykit. He now has a nice S2000 & always leaves it in gear!
