Hi Folks,

Slightly unusual question - I know that when driving in the EU you don't have to display a GB sticker providing you have the Euro numberplates.

Question is - do you have to have those plates front and back? Logic would suggest that the GB sticker would only be on the back and therefore having the europlate only on the back would suffice, but I suspect that you are supposed to have them front and back.

Reason for the question is the car is a Westfield with a stick-on front numberplate (illegal anyway I know) I'm replacing the back number plate as it has a silly care sales web address on it.

Your thoughts would be appreciated smile

Not long now! biggrin

First of all i did not know stick on front plates were illegal? I have never had any problems ever with mine in both UK and in Europe.
I was stopped for speeding on the way to Lemans last year and i only had the GB sticker on the rear of the car and nothing was said at all about the plates or GB sticker. I myself thought it was only the rear of the car that had to display a GB sticker.

the requirement is for the GB if that is where your car is registered to be on the rear of the car, usually on the nearside for us.

Sorry not quite clear - yes if your displaying a GB sticker you only need to have one on the back.

Question is if you have the euro number plates instead can you just have the rear one or are you supposed to have the front aswell.

Stick on number plates info - http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/numberplateinfo.as... right at the bottom. Never had a problem with mine either though smile

I've only had the rear Euro plate on mine for the last 4 years with no issues, I've got a 3/4 size front plate

you can buy the little rectangular blue eu stars-gb stickers at halfords, so you could always add that to the front plate if you're bothered

Mmm did not know that. Although not even the DVLA on there website give reasons as to why they think there illegal. Mine is standard size, with standard size letters with reflective background. So i personally dont see were the DVLA tts are coming from.

If you can find any in stock - I couldn't when I checked this year to pick one up. Picked one up OK last year but taking a different car so have ended up with a more chavtastic one.

If fitted to a modern car it needs to meet the appropriate British Standard and have the BS kite mark. Stick on plates do not meet the standard as they are not rigid and cannot be tested for strength incase they shatter in a crash..... ( I know I know. But the test simply doesn't work, therefore it's a fail).

All that said neither the police or MOT testers care at the moment. A policeman used my stick on non-reflective plate to read my number after the Mrs crashed the car. His interest in the plate was "can I read it, and does it look the proper size and spacing".

So that's self-adhesive plates, rather than attaching a standard plate with sticky pads?

hmmmm..... Im wondering if an illegal stick on plate is better than none at all on the front?!? Ive not had one on my tiger for a while, been stopped once and MOT'd twice with no front plate, and nothings been said about it not being there. It was funny when the bloke doing the MOT went to the front to look for the reg, shrugged his shoulders and walked round the back! Im thinking about putting a vinyl one on before le mans, but might this be more obvious than no plate? hmmmm........

Do not have GB on plates and don't that it is mandatory.

Also have never stuck a GB sticker on the back of any of my cars over the years and never been stopped in France, Belgium etc. So not sure that anyone strictly enforces this (but have always kept one in the boot just in case).

They are required by law but no, it's not that rigorusly enforced. That doesn't help you much when you're stopped by some bored jobsworth having a Le Mans based competition to see who can issue the most fines.

... and being in the boot could arguably be classed as a worse offence than not having one at all.

It is much better to have no plate. An incorrect plate is 3 points and up to £1000 fine where as no plate is a £60 fine, no points and possibly a £40 inspection sign off at an MOT station. Mine just keeps falling off officer;)
