Hey there guys.

Looking for some advice.

I own(ed) a Fiat Coupe Turbo until it blew up earlier this month. This was due to pushing the limits too far with modifications, trying to turn the car into something its not. I had the option of rebuilding it better and stronger, but decided for a 10 year old car, it was best to cut my losses and i am in the process of breaking it.

However, as im here you've probably already guessed this, i'm thinking about getting a Noble m12/m400 for my next car. This is obviously a massive step up in car value etc etc, but after counting the reciepts (the coupes are a SERIOUS DRAIN ON FINANCES) i could nearly own a 2nd hand noble by now, due to the amount spent on my old car.

So what are the running costs like on the Noble? It would be a 2nd car with 5-6k a year on it.

Also what kinda insurance quotes do you guys get for these cars? Im only (wait for it.. ) 23 atm, but i got a quote of £2600 (just a quick estimate) from my insurers yesterday, but they did advise waiting until i was 25 and would get a much better deal. This would also give me time to put a substantial amount aside for the car. Is that the best option?

Also, am i crazy? Am i dreaming thinking about getting one of these ? Do i need to own a certain mansion with certain girls in it?

Thanks for your time

Ross

Well, it just depends on what goes. In the last 9 months, i have spent 1.5k.

Over the 3 years of ownership (including modifications) i'm looking at 17k.

Hmmm well, I'd say about £1k a year is a normal running cost for a Noble, but most people agree that you should have at least £5k backup just in case.

What kinda thing needs £5k backup? I was thinking about some kind of warranty insurance.

You can take out a warranty with these guys - http://www.autoprotect.net/

It should cost about £600 a year but covers pretty much all mechanical failures.

No i dont think you're crazy, you only live once so make the most of itsmile

I'm 35 got 5 years ncb and pay £800 quid with A-plan. I'd say yours is dam cheap with the age you are. Basically if you go to main dealers everytime the car has a niggle then you will need a big wallet. If you know a good mechanic then he should be able to sort the car's niggles out etc for a fraction of the dealers thus saving a fortune.

In my younger years i know how hard i used to drive cars thus risking more wear and tear/problems etc. As i've mellowed slightly in my older years i don't fancy forking out for a new rear diff screwing it round a roundabout etc. If your not too hard on the Noble then she is pretty much bulletproof for reliability. Ask me to ease off on her when i was 23 and i would have said bugga off lol.

It pays to shop around, I was told by a local dealer of a 23 year old haidresser who up until buying an F430 had only driven a Fiat Punto for four years (no claims or points)
His quote....£2200.
Not bad I thought. So I tried the same insurance company... Sorry sir you're too high risk???
I am now 45 I've owned and driven some reasonably quick cars (M400 Porsche Turbo M3 etc) I have full protected no claims and *cough* six penalty points (speeding in a van three years hence)
and a 30K claim (down to a garages incompetence)(the amount is still in dispute)
In the end I tried Adrian Flux who I used to use when I were a lad in the early eighties with a home brewed turbo escort XR3 cos no one would touch me or the car.
Surprised to say they came up trumps with a HNW policy with Norwich Union £1700 all bells and whistles for a 2008 model F430 living in NW London.
You might think this is expensive but I don't have to garage the car at night if I don't want to (I always insist on park anywhere cover) and they put you in a proper car if yours is off the road for accident repair, I'm also told they replace new for old in the case of write off!

I made the mistake of not doing enough research when buying mine (2.5) so I have had lots to do to it. The diff went (4k) then we found that the person before me had let it over heat so a new head gasket (2k) and then as it had the original ECU it needed that changed (2K+) obviuosly there is servicing and other parts like tyres. so in my 2.5yr ownership I have spent around 12k.

Not happy about that but you live and learn. However the car is very close to being top notch just want to change the wheel colour and a couple of other things.

So what I'm saying is my expeirience has probably been one of the worst and it still doesn't come close to your 17k.

If you get a sorted car then all the big things would have been done (a 3R or M400 has all this sorted as std).

Also alot more owners are getting down and dirty with the cars and cheap/time saving methods are poping up all the time. We have a website set up with parts lists and help in doing things yourself rather than paying a garage to do it.

NHW policies are a serious consideration, especially if you have more than one car.

I couldn't agree with this statement more. With some basic knowledge you can keep the car serviced, and in a good condition without having to spend mega money on services.
I spent 4K on servicing last year, and ended up having to spend a great deal of my own time sorting out afterward. Since then, I just do it myself.

Admittedly, I don't drive it as much as I used to (at this rate it'll take another 10 years to put 150K on the clock), but it runs perfectly, always starts first time and never goes wrong.
