My car is 3.5 years old, done over 70K, last week i noticed that the exhaust needed replacing. I can't believe it is falling apart (rusting) so quickly on a fairly young car. is this normal with a car that does all motorway miles ?

So far the rear down pipe rusted away and was left dangling away from the rubber mount, on closer inspection the rear box is also looking rather tatty infact i can put my finger through where the pipe meets the rear box.

Anyone know how much its going to cost?

Cheers

Seriously consider an "aftermarket" stainless steel exhaust system. Most manufacturers will give a lifetime warranty for as long as you own the vehicle. Check out Milltek, Piper, Mongoose, Powerflow, Scorpion. Probably around the £350 mark for a full "cat back" system.

Your best bet is to go for an "aftermarket" stainless steel system from one of the recognised specialists (Piper, Milltek, Mongoose, Scorpion, Magnex) though you would have to check if their listed products will fit a TDCi. Powerflow will make you one up to fit. Most retail for between £350 - £400, BUT, all the above provide a lifetime warranty on stainless steel systems.

Might be worth a phone call to trading standards. Products have to be fit for purpose, and that includes having a reasonable lifespan - even if the warranty only says 12 months! To me it should be 5 years or more, and doing high mileages should mean that there isn't water hanging about in the silencer for weeks on end.

thanks for all the comments, i will have to get the exhaust sorted to day its now dangling around and just about hanging on.

going to take it to the dealers/Kwik-Fit (which ever is cheaper) this morning to get it sorted before it does drop completely on to the ground at 70mph!

i have no intention of keeping the focus more than a couple of months.

Parts for the exhaust come to £100 (cat back), fitted the exhaust in 1hr - 45mins of which was trying to get the old one off! smile
