1. Seems that when the fans kick in the voltage drops from 13 ish volts to 11 and then very slowly recovers. This flicks the red warning light on the dash on. Is this normal ? alternator looks new and I don’t think the fan belt is slipping.

2. Secondly when driving and at steady throttle positions the engine is not very smooth. Under acceleration it is smooth and has plenty of power. Idle is a little rough too, could this be the famed stepper motor. It’s hard to describe how it actually feels as it’s not very pronounced but it is like it is missing a little. Any ideas ?

What year is it? Regarding the lumpy engine - if its a 340bhp one (before they de-tuned them slightly) then at low revs mine was lumpy too. I basically had to drive it in a gear lower in prolonged pootling

I wouldn't be too concerned if it hunts slightly at idle either although cleaning the stepper motor cant do any harm as first step.

Re fans - mine never noteably dipped and certainly never lit a warning light. Could be battery?

1. Worth chceking the earths as the fans will draw a big current and this can artificially raise the earth floor so that you see strange things...

2. Difficult to say. They can be rough when idling especially when hot.

Early 500's had hotter cams which will tend to roughen idle.

1 Seems a bit excessive - but I notice my lights dim when the fans cut in - and they're not that bright to start with!

2 Could be any number or combination of factors, plugs leads, ECU connections, stepper, coolant level, time of the month, Uranus in seventh house of Genesis....

....but I'd be more surprised if it was smooth when hot!

Providing it's pulling well under load I wouldn't worry too much and get it checked over at service time.

The car was built in 93 and I believe it is 340 BHP.

Had my suspicions about the earthling so I’ll look into that one thanks.

The car is due a service soon so I was thinking I may well replace plugs/leads/rotor/cap etc and see how it goes from there. It is in need of some TLC too.

Cheers for the prompt feedback guys I’ll let you know how I get on and get some pics posted up soon. Will be looking to purchase a copy of your Bible Steve, is the club still the best first port of call ?

I’ve ordered the Bible today but the problem with voltage still persists. Seems to be worse when it’s hot and I’m not sure it is always due to the fans cutting in.

Could you point me in the right direction for the earth points on the car ?

Yeah, I found the one on the front of the chassis last night !! You’d have to be a contortionist to get a spanner on it – never mind trying to turn it !!!

Turns out one of the fan connectors is bust and was taped together. The connectors may have been touching each other. I’ve insulated them as best I can for now and I’ve just driven up the road and back. The fans kicked in an as yet no reoccurrence of the problem but I’m not counting my chickens yet.

Can I get a replacement for these connectors ?

Here is a pic of the car – waiting for the sun to get some better ones.
