After about 40 minutes of stop start town driving I parked the cerb up and left it for a few hours. When I came back the clutch pedal for the first 2 inches of travel felt very loose, almost like it was not connected to anything. I had to push it right down to change gear. However after about 30 minutes of driving it started to improve pretty much back to how it was supposed to be.

Has anyone got any ideas what the problem is?

Many thanks.

Sounds like a broken return spring inside your clutch master cylinder. Time for a new master cylinder, I suspect.

^^^^^yes^^^^^^^
this is what happened to mine when i had your problem. wouldnt bother resealing and fitting a new spring not worth the hassle when you can buy a replacement so cheaply now. dont forget to glue the lower bolt into the master cylinder it makes it so much easier to refit and remove next time

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Is a new master cylinder a hard or expensive thing to replace? and where is the best place to source one from?

About £65 from CT.Took me about four hours to fit.The hardest part beint the lineing up of the threaded nut/bolt on the end of the pipe,in to the body of the cylinder.

£65 sounds expensive to me i know i definately paid less for mine(can be found cheaper on ebay). not to bad a job if you have a mate to hold spanner under the bonnet whilst you scrabble around in the footwell. although i did mine on my own in an evening. first i disconnected the pipe giving a little more room to undo the bolts,i wedged the spanner on the bolts then carefully undid the nuts in the footwell removed the pin through the peddle. thats the old one off, i then bonded the bolts into the new cylinder, once that was sufficiently hardened i placed it back in the innerwing and started the pipe thread into the cylinder loosely got back into the footwell and tightened the nuts refitted pin to peddle and tightened pipe fitting securely, then asked shmbo nicely to come and help bleed the clutch, job done. hope this helps thumbup
