Hi all,

I'm thinking about entering the world of Alfa Romeo with a GTV v6. I'm looking at a late nineties version so there seems to be a mix of 5 and 6 speed boxes available.

Does anyone have any views on whether there are any issues with either, and what is going to be more fun to drive.

Cheers.

if its the same as the 5 speed 6 speed opitions on the 166 then there not to much between them.

The 6 speed isn't that much higher ratio than the 5 speed so there won't be any noticable diffrence in economy.

I've got a 5 speed and have never thought Oh I wish I had a 6 speed. People say the 6 speed is better.

I think the 6 speed gear box is a bonus but in not way would I left that be the deciding factor of the car. you'll be happy with either.

This might be stuipid but my mother has a 6 speed Nissan when she drives dads Misti she sometime meshs the R of the 5-speed gear box!

Silly I know but its just something you should be a ware of. if you train yourself to use a 6 speed.

I have a 2001 6 speed, I have never tried the 5 speed but I believe that the 6 speed has a better shift quality, mine is certainly very good.

Thats a good point I once tried a dog of a GTV (it was £1300 and that was over priced) But the five speed box felt like a cheap shopping car. It might just have been this one abused car though.

The shift on my 166 is divine. but they might be different setups between the cars.

My old GTV 3.0 was a 5 speed, and my 147 GTA was a six. Shift felt about the same on both, and there was very little drawback performance wise or in m-way cruise to the 5sp. So buy a good car and you'll be very happy with either I reckon.
