I was browsing through the classifieds on here the other day and was really suprised at the price of 2002 Range Rovers...

Now to me, back 5/6 years ago, these cars where 70k plus (Vogues)?...and now you can pick them up for circa. 12-16k.

Are these to be avoided?...Any problems with them?...Servicing costs excessive?...Is this due to the 400 quid yearly tax or?

I'm sure it's far to good to be true as you are getting a lot of car for your money!

If, however it is a good time to buy one, are there any things that I should be aware of? For example:
Servicing?...Intervals? Major Service?
Brakes? When do they get renewed?
Air Suspension?...any issues?
Petrol or Diesel?
Vogue or HSE?
Are these engines ok for 100k plus miles?
Any other issues that I should be aware of?

Thanks

All though these cars have dropped in price, maintainance costs are still huge.Almost twice the price of the previous P38 model. There are a number of problem areas to look at.Front diffs, alternators, electric tilt steering wheel, injectors on the diesel model.Try and buy as late as possible, and with a possible warranty.

Woody - I read this with a smile on my face! I recently part-ex'd my '52 RR Vogue back back with the LR dealer I bought it from about 3 yrs ago. I had a couple of minor issues early on with the car (silly things like a squeaky seat etc.) but the car was 100% totally reliable. It never let me down in any way at all. I used it for daily commute/ school run/ driving around UK and even on two trips to Switzerland - one with some lovely deep snow and one in the summer. The car was perfect. I bought it for £48k, got £18k on part-ex. I almost wept. frown

Prices have taken a hammering (IMHO) because of the rising cost of fuel (I got about 13mpg around town, and it does start to hurt...); car tax has gone mental, and I think there is a bit of a stigma with driving such big cars. But I found servicing very reasonable. I had 3 services in my time, the biggest was about £600, the others were about £400. Not bad for what you are driving. They are a fantastic drive - every journey is a pleasure. I miss mine, but don't miss the fuel consumption...!

Thanks for your replies so far. This forum seems rather quiet compared to the others I use on here, or is it cos I'm the new one?

Anyway...

Servicing costs per year is on average say £500-£600? tax £440? Insurance will be whatever...and then petrol/diesel. I think I will go for a petrol as I won't be using it everyday, probably about 7k miles a year tops.

I understand that these cars aren't going to be as cheap as a Fiesta to run, but as I'm only going to be using it for "special occasions", I think the costs will be kept to a minimum.

Basically I need a family car to do private comfortable miles in, so I don't put stupid unecessary miles onto my Porsche with two squashed people in the back. I do have a Defender 90 as my work horse, but travelling on the motorway with a car full isn't exactly the most comfortable of experiences!

I'm hoping a Range Rover will fill this gap?...I have been looking at Audi's etc, but they just aren't "wow" enough. Oh and the fact that it winds the green people up, also makes me more drawn towards the RR...is that wrong? haha.

Can anyone give me a rough estimate and breakdown of their yearly costs?

Also advice on whether the Diesel is more reliable than the Petrol? I assume Vogue is a better spec than the HSE too?

Sorry for all of the questions.

Liam

Vogue is top spec.Cant give a breakdown on yearly costs,as every vehicle and use is different. But when they do go wrong, its the parts expense that is high.Diesel and petrol are both reliable as one another.

I bought an 04 plate petrol Vogue with 30k miles from a main dealer for £22k in February. They really are incredible value at the moment!

They are fantastic value at the moment and a lot of owners will be shocked at how little they will get when they sell it on. I have a 53 reg Vouge and it has served very well. Only problems i've had are a few of the common ones such as electric steering adjustment sometimes not working, pretty inaccurate parking sensors and an awful rear screen wiper spray.

would it be at all economically viable to look at the new diesel, more expensive initally but the mpg is hugely improved and it doesn't sound like a bus! Plus with the all new RR a couple of years off the resale values may be better.

Dark or Light Blue? With light leather and wood, it's the best colour combo IMHO.... but then I may be just a little bit biased!

I recently bought a 03 HSE V8 for under £20k with 30000 miles and FSH. Practically unmarked. I've had plenty of BMWs in the past so I'm hoping that as it's almost an X5 in a bodykit, there won't be too many issues. My research indicated the Landrover satnav has a few issues as it isn't a BMW system, which is why many people pay the £££ and swap it for the real (BMW) thing. Mine has a Garmin on the dash which does the job perfectly well.wink

Up until the 05 model year or thereabouts all Rangies used the standard BMW nav and comms system you'd find in X5 and 3/5/7series. Then it switched to the Jaguar touchscreen system. Had both and had endless problems with the BMW one in my M5 and X5, so was damned glad I got a later Rangie with the lurvely Jag system!

Prices are falling fast for rangies at the moment,at bca car auctions last week a nice 53 plate 4.4 vogue in silver, nice mileage under 60k i think, only made £12400,the vendor wanted £15k,looks like they will be keeping that for a while or taking a big loss, there really isn't much interest in such big cars,i would wait a bit longer if you really want to buy one,you WILL save a heap of money, unless fuel drops significantly in price, and we know that won't happen, that vogue has lost £750ish this month in glasses guide,in reality its prob lost alot more.

Brightwells had a Vogue go through last month at £10K

They're in freefall and unlikely to recover, any price in the teens is a bargain for what must be one of the best cars in the world.

i have to admit im a fan of black with black leather, the only other colour i really really like is the grey, most of the other colours are still fine and i would buy one in most colours, the only 2 i think are really bad is that metallic burgandy and Epsom green, while it suited the P38 so well it looks hideous on the L322 in my opiniion.

Do you have a link?...I may be interested...email me if you wish.

Thanks for all of your replies. Maybe all this "taxation" on large vehicles is actually good for buyers and is actually making these cars more affordable to buy. The offset between the tax and how much the car costs to buy second hand are in a way cancelling one another out.

The only people affected are the people that buy these cars brand new.

There we are Woody. I have put a very low buy it now now. I was offered just shy of that a few weeks ago and thought the guy was taking the mickey but that seems to be the way the market is going.
