Auto vs Steptronic - is there a difference?
Discussion
My '02 330ci is an auto/steptronic. May not be exactly the same but works like this: Move lever to "D", to drive the car as a normal automatic with 5 gears. Move the lever to the left, and you get "S" which is fully automatic but with raised shift points, faster throttle response and only the four lower gears. Once in "S", you can push the lever forward for a lower gear or backwards for a higher gear all the way to fifth. To return to auto mode, push the lever to the right, back to "D".
Hope this helps.

I need a quick bit of advise please.
As per the title really. I'm looking around for an 02 e39 530i Sport auto - some of the ads say Auto, some say Steptronic.
Is there actually a difference between the two?
Nope the box is exactly the same. There are only two choices of gearbox for an 02 530i - the auto and a manual. As per the title really. I'm looking around for an 02 e39 530i Sport auto - some of the ads say Auto, some say Steptronic.
