How hard would it be to replace a saxo vsx 1.4 8v engine for a 1.6 16v unit? What would be required as the missus wants something abit quicker and her 1.4 is gettng abit sluggish! i know the 16v has rear disc brakes but are these really necesssary as the rear drums brakes have been recently replaced and seem adequate!

Why not just sell the 1.4 and buy the 1.6. Modifing the 1.4 will kill you on the insurance I'd think more than just buying a 1.6 version.

I dont want to piss on your bonfire but tbh all the work for 200cc really isnt worth it. yeah engines might be cheap and even a good swap - but if youve a known quantity in what you have got putting someone elses turkey engine in your bay wont bring smiles.
theres plenty of bang for buck cars around - just buy one - dont make one imho
