V6 shogun! how thursty?
Discussion
Hi folks, we need a little shogun for towing and have been looking at the 2.8 diesels, but the 2 we have seen so far have been a little errrrr shall we say abused, too be honest i've not got a great deal to spend (2500) so i cant expect to much but any way i've been trying to get a late 98 car with the wide arches and have seen a couple of 3ltr v6's that look just right but whenever i mention to friend's about the v6 a sharp intake of breath is soon followed by 12 to the gallon kid, can someone who actually owns one (or have) give me there honest oppinion :-), its a manual by the way.

We've recently bought a 2000(X) 3.5 GDI 5 Door Shogun (Auto), bought for the following reasons:-
1) Have a large caravan to tow
2) Live in a rural area, very muddy single track lanes
3) Local Mechanic, reckoned that Petrol ones are more reliable than the Diesel
4) My research showed Diesel around 23-25mpg (I could be wrong), Petrol around 20-22mpg - Automatic figures (and with the price of Diesel v Petrol makes next to no difference)
5) Petrol ones are cheaper to buy
6) Buying pre March 2001 means cheaper future road tax
So far we've done 1500 miles, including a trip to Holland with a roof box, and the overall average on the trip computer is 21.7mpg
The only disadvantage of the GDI engine that I can see, is that at present you can't LPG it. I spoke to a local coverter who had a 3 door one he converted for himself and with a few thosand miles needed new injectors, apparently the injectors need a certain amount of petrol for lubrication. A kit has been developed for the 4 cylinder GDI engines which does 5% Petrol/95% LPG but though it's been announced for the 6 cylinder vehicles isn't available yet (I I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig).
As a vehicle, we're very impressed with it and it will certainly meet our needs.
Hope that helps

I've just sourced a 2.8td auto swb for a friend who wanted one for towing the horsebox. Surprisingly hard to find when you want a nice one.
The TD's are hideously unecomical for what they are are, so I can imagine a petrol one could be better! But for towing a TD would be the way to go I would expect.
