Bit of advice please guys - I know you don't all want to divulge what you've got hidden around your cars security wise, but I'd like some advice on what to do while I'm building mine.

For insurance purposes I think I'm going to need an alarm/immobiliser, and suspect I'll need Thatcham Cat 1 rating with installer's certificate.

What I don't really want to do is finish the car then have someone diving into the wiring (and pay 400 quid for the privilege!), I'd far rather install the system myself during the build if I can - I'm hoping to be fitting the cockpit section within the next week or so. One option is to try to find an installer who will inspect my installation and give me a certificate, but I don't know any local installers. Or have any of you managed to get decent terms with a self fitted alarm/immobiliser, if so with who?

To fit a Cat 1 alarm will I need to have door switches on the doors, bonnet and canopy?

If you don't want to post what's on your car in the forum I'd appreciate any private email replies.

Cheers,

Bob

I went into a local installer (with picture of what car will look like, this always helps) discussed what I wanted to achieve and agreed a price. I will instal it and he will inspect it.
You will need cat 1 but I believe this is only relating to the imobiliser in which case door switches do not apply. I believe you would be best to buy an alarm/imobiliser combo unit for only a few quid more which will need switches.
My system will also central lock using the same remote fob.
I bought all the kit from the same guy who was most helpfull. The door lock motors were £4 each.

To get the thatcham approval I had to get an approved installer fit mine... with me present telling him were to put the wires, what to imobalise etc....

It was more like supervision with him plugging it in, and they didn't mind at all, just ask.

Also I only paid £250 for my toad cat 1... and it wasn't the bottom of the range (of cat 1 alarms), I also rate it higher than the clifford G4 on my other car which was £400!

I had fitted a Cat 2 immobiliser during the build (which incidently was essential as it would not have passed SVA otherwise due to no steering lock). Not good enough for any insurance co. MSM gave me 1 month to have a Cat 1 prof. fitted. I too was unhappy about letting someone else in about my unique wiring, but there was no option. So I took the car to a local auto electrics outfit. They disconnected my old immob., put in a Scorpion Cat 1 for £350, fitted door and clip switches etc and made a neat enough job. I just provided them with the wiring diagram and a few notes.
Central locking is a good idea, I might retro fit.

I have an FIA kill switch and a removable steering wheel.

The Kill switch does what a CAT1 immobiliser does, and the removable wheel is a bonus.

No problems insuring with MSM like this.

Right.... I've got a removable steering wheel and the FIA kill switch as well............

All I need now is your address

Incidentally I had a conversation with an Andy Guy last night about my old RS1600i.... he tells me he's an old mate of yours.

Yeah, I know Andy (TinTin) pretty well. He's running a car repair place isn't he?

Btw. The FIA switch and wheel are only TWO if the devices installed I may be daft, but I'm not THAT daft!

I was told that fitting cat 1 alarm to Canam bit tricky. Insurance company agrred to cat2 immobiliser provided backed by tracker. Maybe a bit of expensive option. I know it works as was set off as soon as car was moved from factory. Very reassuring. The system was fitted whilst car was at factory for SVA.

Thanks guys, much appreciated

I've found a local guy who'll come and fit the main module(s) into the car/wiring loom and let me deal with the door switches, locks etc. later.
