Hoping soneone out there can help with some advice for my 2000 1.8 petrol Focus. It has started to nuder-rev when idling, and occasionally cutting out what stopped at junctions if I dont keep the revs up above 1000, it does over-rev at times, but then it drops to below 1000. I have heard that this may be as a result of a faulty idle control valve.

Does anyone have any other ideas as to what it could be? and what the potential costs could be

Cheers

Sounds like idle control valve, you can try cleaning it with brake/carb cleaner. If it doesn't work, new ones aren't very expensive from ford.

yes

Idle control valve. 1 Haynes manual (optional) + 1 can of carb cleaner.

I had a simliar problem, it would not idle steadily and would cut out if left for a minute. The fault was a split in the crankcase breather hose. Found at the rear right of the engine behind the inlet manifold.

You can trace it from the right hand of the engine, it joins onto a metal pipe that runs under the ignition coil.
