Hi My 1992 griff has 65000 miles and (touch wood) has been very good to me. A few months ago at Peninsula they told me there is a slow leak at the rear seal into the clutch housing but as it was so minor not to worry and have it changed when my clutch is changed (probably in the next few months). I noticed however over last week that when I go to engage gear in most gears there is a slight grind as if it doesnt want to go into place and then it is ok and slips in. Initially I thought maybe this was to do with the clutch on its way out (not very mechanical me)but spoke to a mechanic yesterday and he said this wouldnt cause my symptoms and possibly the clutch sytem is leaking etc. Any ideas?

Try to pump the pedal a couple of times before you engage a gear, if tht works OK then it sounds like you need to ge the seal replaced and the system bled

hi mike, hows things.in reply to your problem,it could well be worn seals in slave cylinder(pull rubber outer cover off end and check for leaks).or worn master cylinder seals, leak not always apparent(check up under drivers side of dash at the top of cluch pedal for damp carpet etc).or the seal on the piston could be "passing" thus reducing pressure to slave cylinder.on my old triumph i had the clutch itself replaced to relieve the symptoms you describe(wasnt slipping) and it worked.also wifes mx5 has poor change(but no grating)and having just replaced master and slave cylinders to no avail, although slave was leaking, were now going to buy a new clutch.sorry for long reply, hope this helps-cheers,mv. ps dont know if remote linkage for gearstick is mounted the same as it was on the sd1/tr7(its the same box),but the little rubber support bracket bushes on them used to rot,the likage would lower, and thus would not engage gear properly.
