SMG & SMG2

Can anyone tell me the difference between a SMG1 and SMGII?

Also, how do I tell if the car i'm buying has 1 or 2? (M3 conv)

Easy one this:

SMG is found in the E36

SMG II is found in the E46

SMG II is the updated version, not sure of the technical details of the change, but SMG II is widely regarded as a massive improvement, not least in terms of reliability.

But if you're looking at an E36 then that won't help you at all!
