Blue smoke on tick over, goes when car is moving, it seems at lights or tick over smoke comes out the exhausts. Its an old Ford V6 3ltr essex engine, i had the hardened valve seats fitted 8 years ago, just changed the oil to magnatec, any ideas. It also runs rough for a few minutes if you turn it off and restart it about 5 mins later ?

Valve stem oillaugh seals for certain & poss worn guides, the stock stem seals are crap and if they dont ride of the valve guides they work harden and dont seal the valve stem anymore, these are a major pain in the neck(same seal as the Pinto)i take it we are talking an early seventies to late Essex rather than the earlier version(69/70) with umbrella style seals as this will indicate knackered valve guides only,it may be worth changing the oil for something with more body 15/40-15/50 for example,in this weather you will get a little bit of fuel purculation/heat soak present when restarting from hot but once the carb float bowl is purged it should run OK,have you got a fuel return coming from the carb fuel inlet back to the tank?glad your using an old Essex i love that thirsty old bugger, little bit of info get a 75 degree stat in your motor it will run sweeter this motors rear two cylinders run very hot a combination of poor water pump location causing poor circulation + poor fuel distribution of the intake manifold to the rear cylinders(lean)not ideal biggrin

Treat it to some old school oil this modern stuff does not suit it.
A GTX 20w50, GTX high mileage 20w50 or Halford Classic 20w50.

Had the same problem with the 3.5 in my Range Rover. Drained it out and put in 20w50 and it's happy again.
