I've read about these chips and found several sites selling them from between £130 and £500, promising 30% more power and ~8% better fuel efficiency. Have considered getting one for my 100PS 2004 focus 1.8tdci but come from the "if it sounds too good to be true it probably is" camp.

Does anyone have any experience of these, good or bad?

Hi there,

With most of these products, it is unlikely that fuel economy will be altered (for better or worse) but a good one will be able to improve torque and power while a bad one can easily wreck your engine. The one in your link for example I would tend to shy away from. You would be better off buying from a big well known company such as MoreGo, Superchips or Tunit. A friend has had a chip fitted to his Rover 75 CDTi by Tunit and he is very satisfied with it - says it's improved performance and also claims to be getting sligthly better mpg as well. He's had the conversion done about 10 months ago and hasn't had any problems since.

Most of the better conversions will cost around £500 and you should expect to gain about 25-35 bhp. This will provide a noticeable performance gain but should not increase wear on the clutch, transmission and engine internals too much so your car should still remain reliable. So if you want more power, by all means go for it thumbup

Hopefully someone who's had the work done on a Focus will be along shortly to tell you more.

I had my old Mondeo (TDCI 130) chipped by CCC Technology, who use Upsolute chips and it was really good. Performance was much improved, in terms of it was much quicker and also it reved much quicker and all the way round to the red line.
I think the idea that it improves economy comes from it accelerates more quickly, so you're on the gas less time and so use less fuel. Sadly that didnt work for me, as it just made me drive quicker (in the correct conditions etc...)
