330d or 320d msport, advice needed
Discussion
i am looking for auto if i choose 330d, sales bloke reakons he was running one to and from work, stuck in traffic etc and returned 35mpg, but you know what there like for bullst, to be honest if this is true i will go for one straight away because there doesnt seem to be a great deal of difference in prices between them and i know 330 will be nicer drive.
Definitely go for one that is post sept 2007 build, this will be an efficient dynamics model and the comsumtion on the autos is up around 10mpg for town and fast motorway driving.
I have a remapped 320d and I am amazed by it performance wise, I get 39.7 round town (it is an auto) and 45mpg on a run doing 95kph most of the time.
If you drive at 70 you will see 50mpg no problem.
With the tuning box on I never feel it is lacking anything and that is coming from a 335i touring.
However, if I were to do it again I would get the 330i petrol, I had one for two days and returned just under 35mpg, used to get 24 from the 335i, and it felt awesome. Something about the BMW NA straight six that is nicer than the 335i. It now has 272bhp and is serioulsy quick when you want it to be.
So 330d consumption, 335d performance (although Carlos will be here to tell you it is well behind) a great sound and because it is an NA engine when you want to potter about it is really relaxing, but get it to 4000rpm and it comes alive.

That was a manual, but when I took it back raving on about the mpg the guys there were saying the same thing about the auto too, they were all amazed with that too. He said he was getting 32mpg from the 335d round town and 29mpg from the 330i auto round town, he also said the previous one struggled to get 22mpg, so a hell of a jump.
I got 33.6 mpg from my 120d auto (2006), ad with the tuning box that went up to just under 36mpg.
The 320d gets 39.7 for comparison.
Diesels take ages to get to temp, the first 4 miles is terrible consumption wise, the next 4 get better, and you need to be doing a good 20 miles at a steady pace to get real benefits. The six cylinder ones are even worse, my 535d got 24 round town, 26 over 25k miles. The 335i got the same. The way petrol prices are going does diesel still make as much sense?

Both my brother and I also had manual E46 330i models and struggled to get more than 25mpg on an average commute.

Exactly, the difference between an August 07 build and a September 07 build is around 7mpg. What they have done with the new 330i is unreal. df
Take a 330i out too and see what you think.
[quote=Welshbeef]Extra urban the new 330i will do c55mpg... incredible.
Note the difference is firstly the efficient dynamics but more importantly is that the engine is now direct injection and this is why at idle the petrol does sound tractor like/very tappety/very diesely until on the move.
I wonder if direct injection eliminates the need to run rich/higher rpm when cold. My 330 gets down to 700 rpm tickover straight away.
