Help!I went to start my car and it sounded like the battery was flat. I know it's not but when I turned off the ignition it carried on on it's own. I undid the battery and all was well....apart from the smoke pouring from the starter motor. Can someone tell me why it carried on by itself and apart from the starter motor, does it have a separate solenoid as there are no signs on the motor itself? Also how much should I pay for one and where from?

Thanks,

John.

Why do people continue to post, stating no real information ???

What car ? What do you mean carried on ??

Virtually every modern car has the solenoid slapped on the side of the starter motor, and is very easy to see. Unless the starter is located in a very awkward spot in the car, and thats why it cant be seen.

only very very very old cars had remote solenoids. What car is it ????

Either way, sounds quite simply like one, or both is knackered.

I do appologise for being a numb-skull. Yes it's a Ford x-flow. After I turned the ignition off and took the key out it was still trying to turn until I diconnected the battery. There is no current from earth to the positive lead that connects to the starter now when I turn the key.

Thanks.

As your starter got only on thick cable going to it? if its a X Flow its probably an old Inertia type starter(separate solenoid) and it sounds like your starter solenoid mounted on the inner wing somewhere as diedwink unless its a faulty ignition switch(same symptom)get it checked out.
