I love scaring the socks of myself and I am currently indulging this odd allure with the creepy and uneasy Japanese / Korean and Spanish horror movies.

I have always been surprised at just how profoundly I can get affected by such forbidding films, but I enjoy the experience in much the same way as I enjoy rollercoasters – some have even caused problems with sleep – this is always a good sign of a properly terrifying movie.

Jumpy moments are often predictable and do cause me to throw the cat across the room, but a constant sense of foreboding and unease affects me the more than anything.

The films that have currently caused these deep feelings of powerful, welling dread are (in no particular order):

The Ring (original) – this fked up my sleep for weeks – the movement of the girl out of the telly still creeps me out. The US version was also exceptional – the tortured faces are impressively horrific.

The Grudge (original) – Hellish visions of haunting and they broke the golden rule of ‘you are safe under your duvet’.

REC – wonderful gonzo zombie movie with very effective building panic, claustrophobia and a stunning ending.

The Orphanage – Evil kid with a grubby mask with a mad old woman. Good film and powerfully frightening.

Blair Witch Project – I know most people hate this film but maybe it is because I grew up in the county with a dark forest nearby, but the film got to me like no other. The final scene left me completely shell shocked and I did not sleep a wink for weeks.

Infection – good story within a dark, moody hospital dealing with an unknown disease. It got a little cheesy but again, very scary.

Reincarnation – amazing twist, brilliant creepy hotel and another violation of bed safety laws.

There have been others but these are the ones that cause most insomnia. I am hungry for more so please PH - recommend me something to shatter and ruin my fragile sense of wellbeing.

Hairspray.

[shudders]

The mere mention of its name is a sort of cinematic brown noise for me.

Absolutely.... Biggest mistake I made was watching this in the Cinema....

But being a bloke I was not allowed to show fear.... Inside I was bricking it.

I'm a fan of Jap horror too, The original Dark Water is a good one.

Watched 1408 last night, pretty edge of seat stuff.

try Frailty, a little known and under-rated horror film. Also found Jacob's Ladder to be pretty good.

Yep, Event Horizon was an unexpected shocker, the concept is about as close to a realistic Hell as possible though I think the second half was weak.

R-Point viewed last week. Quite unpleasant and very odd.

Indeed, I didnt know what I was watching next thing I know some Jap girl has blood coming out of her eyes...

And the blood out of the radio WTF????

Reminded me of the scene in full metal jacket where they find the sniper girl and watch her die..

But no, R-point is very creepy..

Yup, also very scared by that film. Just a shame that the director / writer W. S. Anderson has produced only crap since.

I have R Point Sky plussed to watch at some point. I was tempted to just delete it as it's been hanging round on there for ages - I think I'll probably watch it now.

+1 for R-Point.

Deathwatch is another very good war/horror.

I hate horror movies, and am not ashamed to say as a grown man they scare the sh*t out of me!
None the less, I have some weird fascination...

Event Horizon - not scary IMHO - like Lost in Space on LSD though!

How about for the most genuinely disturbing and terrifying movie ever:

- Cannibal Holocaust

seriously, it will f*ck you up. Not to be watched by the faint hearted.

A great film. I too saw it at the cinema, and the frights and shocks from the bangs and crashes in the sound system really contribute to the overall fear.

Grim indeed.

Uneasy, not scary.

Agreed - another from the 'uneasy' category for me was the Jap film 'Battle Royale'
